80's Kitchen Nightmares

 80's Kitchen Nightmares...

The 1980s may be making a comeback in apparel, but forget about it ever coming back into your house. What were design guru's thinking Nagel prints, neon lights, nightclub paint colors and melamine oak striped cabinets? While some things are easier to replace than others, 1980's kitchens continue to haunt the housing market, especially now since buyers are looking for move-in ready homes.

Buyers immediately start seeing dollar signs when they see melamine oak striped cabinets in the heart of the home. That type of dated decor can become a deal breaker for buyers,  so it's important for sellers to address those types of repairs. Do your seller's currently own an 80's kitchen? If so we have a simple and cost effective solution for them to update their space.

The owner of this kitchen at 145 95th St. in Bayridge, Brooklyn just listed his two bedroom co-op when his Realtor recommended Stylish Stagers, Inc. At first we suggested he use rental furniture in his vacant space, however upon looking closer at the kitchen we knew the kitchen needed some tender love and care, so we put together a proposal that would address those repairs as well.

As you can see, the melamine cabinets were  water damaged and the laminate countertop and backsplash left much to be desired. The laminate floor was dirty, worn and torn, while the stove provided flashbacks to the 70's.  Stylish Stagers, Inc. was able to convince the homeowner to make the necessary changes to the kitchen based on the facts that any repairs we did would bring a return on investment.

What a transformation! It's a simple fix that's cost effective. In order to get this look first lightly sand and paint the oak strips to match the color of the melamine. Then we painted the backsplash and countertop with Rustoleum Countertop Paint, which is made specially to go over this type of material. Next, we found fabulous contemporary stainless steel hardware, in this case the bigger the better, and added the bling needed on the doors and drawers. Finally we used a durable, modern looking stick on tile ( I recommend still gluing the tiles, rather than rely on the sticky backs) that we glued right to the existing floor, removed the stove and add some key accessories to complete the look.

For about $400 in materials this homeowner got a brand new kitchen that will easily "WOW" buyers into making an offer. If your listing has a kitchen in disrepair like this one your doing your sellers a diservice, by not offering our expertise, please Contact Us to find out how we can help!

Hi Tori--that kitchen is now a big "Wow" indeed.  I like this approach to dealing with these melamine cabinets and they are over Maui.  What was your experience with the counter-top paint?  I have looked at this product but never recommended it.

Amazing. Such little cost for such a huge transformation.  Again, absolutely amazing.

Congratulations. Your home staging is being featured in the group Staging Before and After Pictures.

Tori - This gives the new buyers a clean, workable kitchen until they're ready to gut and replace.  The investment to the seller was very minimal, but the outcome looks like a million bucks!  Great job!

Hi Tori. Thanks for the tip about Rustoleum paint for the counter top. I've only used Ben Moore paint to date so I will give it a try. Truly impressive results and all for $400. Hard to believe the difference.

Hi all, glad you liked the results. The countertop paint I used once before on a bathroom sink countertop. It's amazing and looks great just needs time to dry between coats.

thanks michelle, I was a bit surprised at the cost of materials too! I even marked them up 20% because I had to go purchase them. It's just a no brainer.
