Our day at Coats for Kids in Sacramento in photos and video

Susan Neal at Coats for KidsYesterday Jon and I had a volunteer opportunity that I wrote a bit about last night.  We helped the Sacramento Salvation Army at coat distribution day for the Coats for Kids event at Cal Expo.  For more information about the distribution, see my earlier post.

Today I took the video snippets I took during breaks in the action and edited them together to make a video to share with you.

I have to say that I am so impressed with the way the Salvation Army organizes these events.  They run with such smoothness and with a system designed not to overwhelm either the volunteers or the clients who come to be served.

For days before the event, volunteers sorted the coats, eliminating any that were soiled, stained, or damaged in any way, then hanging the nice ones on racks by size and whether they Coats for Kidswere for boys or girls, men or women.  So the day of distribution there were dozens of full racks of great coats and jackets.

The way the coats event progressed was for the clients to check in at a different building and get tickets for the number of coats for which they qualify.  They can have one coat for each family member living with them.  The ticket assigns them to Group A or Group B.

When they walk over to the building where the coats are, they line up according to their Group.  About every 10 minutes, either Group A or Group B is allowed inside and given 20 minutes to shop from the Clients shopping for free coats for their familiescoats on their side of the room (Side A or Side B).  At the end of 20 minutes, we have to ask them to move to the checkout area, where their ticket is checked and they can leave with the authorized number of coats.

So there is always one side that is just getting started while the other is just finishing.  The crowds never get unwieldy, and the checkout volunteers don’t get overwhelmed.

In my video you will see Group B going to Side B, then Group A coming in to Side A, where Jon and I were working.  All day long Sharon Ito, anchor and reporter on our local Channel 10 News, was doing brief live TV shots, most of which were done between rows of coats.

At one point in the afternoon, she wanted to do a live shot showing a lot of the volunteers at one of the sorting/hanging tables from which we periodically would go to get more coats to replenish the stock on the racks.  By that time she and I had had several conversations and so while she was gathering volunteers for that tv set-up and still had about 3 minutes to air, I asked her to turn to give me a quick clip of her.

When we got home I turned on the TV and there was Sharon, doing another live shot, back in the coat racks.   Sharon Ito reporting from Coats for Kids distributionI was tired after working there for 4 hours, but she was there all day, urging people who needed coats to come down and get them for free.

The Coats for Kids program is sponsored by Channel 10 News and the Salvation Army and widely promoted on Channel 10 – they do good work!  This is its 21st year and there have been a half million coats donated in that time.

If you ever have an opportunity to participate in any of the Salvation programs, try it once, and you’ll find yourself looking forward to the next time.
