Kayaking on the Big Island

Maile's Kayaks on the Big Island was a hoot.  We took a short road trip from Kona on the Kealakeua Bay Road and we found Maile's Kayaks.  We rented two kayaks and paddled out into Captain Cook Bay.  It was 10 am and beautiful, all of a sudden we were surrounded by three pods of spinner dolphins, twisting, leaping and playing not five feet away from us.

Maile's Kayaks is run by a really nice man called Dexter, who will give you a run down on all the locals, not require a safety brief, and make you laugh, bottom line it is a no fuss rental. Super cheap $60 for two people for as much time as you want.  The snorkeling equipment is a bit iffy so take your own.  We pulled the Kayaks up on the shore of Captain Cook Park (you will need a state park permit to leave your kayaks on the shore of the park but it is well worth it).

The snorkeling was amazing and we spent three hours swimming and seeing the most brilliant colored fish and coral.  On our return trip in the Kayak (it's about half a mile from Maile's Kayaks) we were able to spend more time with the spinner dolphins

The dolphins are nocturnal so they got to the bay to sleep in the morning.  The Big Island is so beautiful and kayaking is a great way to get out and see the marine life. Captain Cook park is great too, a fellow Brit who met a sticky end but very cool to see the monument and experience some of the best of the flora and fauna on the Big Island

I'm convinced now, it's not possible to take a bad picture of a scene in Hawaii. Not sure avoiding the safety brief is a good idea though.

Take me with you Kerrie, not that you don't see enough of me already, but I promise to be quiet (well almost quiet)
