why you should care about the school systemWhy You SHOULD Care about the School System Even When Moving WITHOUT KIDS

Its not uncommon for buyers moving without kids to not worry about the school system but the reality is that there are reasons why you should care about the school system even when moving without kids.

For starters, are kids in your future?  Maybe you don't have kids today but if kids are in your future, the school system will then be important.  Maybe your intention would be to sell in a few years prior to your kids attending school but keep in mind, circumstances can change and you may be faced with school aged children but unable to make a move at that time.

why you should care about the school systemGood communities begin with their school system.  Many desirable and sought over areas to live in are those with good school systems.  Unfortunately if the school system is compromised, not only do the school and students suffer, but the community suffers as a whole, and house values may start to decline.

To protect the value of your home, you must protect the school system. Many homes for sale in towns with top ranked schools have higher price tags.  The schools do matter whether you have children or not.  Good school systems will protect the value of your home.

You should care about the school system even when moving without children because the school system can be a vital part in determining the current and future value of your home.

Gina,

Of course, this is solved in some of the better neighbourhoods with private schools but, across the board this is very, very significant. Sometimes just living on the other side of the street can make a difference.

Great post. Think "FUTURE" and also think "RE-SALE", specially if we are talking about single family homes 3 bedrooms or more

Ruthmarie, thanks for commenting and I respect your opinion and call me naive but I don't think $$$$ is gaining the system on the test scores.  I do agree that in some areas that I cover the towns with the higher ranking schools have higher price tags on their homes that not all people can afford but the majority of towns here range tremendously in pricing.  I'm not sure about Westchester but from what you wrote I'm thinking its way out of hand!

Thank you for reading my post and taking the time to share your thoughts.

Jennifer, after reading Ruthann's comment above your's - I'm thinking you and her may be onto something in New York.  Here to we have towns that have outrageous taxes and some with better schools but not all of them.  Unfortunately I understand how many seniors, especially those on fixed incomes, can find it difficult to pay the taxes.

Ellie, I've written a few on this topic - usually in the spring when its time to vote on the school budget and board of ed candidates, town officials, etc.  I certainly see a trend here in North Jersey with desired areas and their school systems.

Kathy, that's the exact reason why I wrote the title that way because if you don't have children, you don't seem to care about the schools and that's totally normally behavior for someone without kids.

Thanks Cameron!

Thanks for the reblog Nancy.

Hi Richard and Jean, I definitely agree  -- they go hand in hand.

Gabe, unfortunately they do.  That's when we market their homes to new retirees :)

Cheryl, very true.

Sandy, I agree and for buyers, especially first-time buyers, its difficult for them to think about or understand future resale.

Barbara-Jo, thanks for the approval! Its nice to know I'm supported by a former instructor.
