Text Messaging Guide for Grown-ups

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc., Crofton, MD 21114

Woman Text Message

Even people over 30 know what it means when we see RSVP or BYOB.  The language of text messaging is really not much different from that.

Entire phrases are reduced to a few letters so people can type quickly with their thumbs on cell phones and other electronic devices, using minimal text to communicate.

I highly recommend A Guide to Understanding Online Chat if you need help reading text messages or if you want to start sending them.  In fact, you may want to print out the entire guide for reference.  There are 100 or more phrases, plus a guide for abbreviations used in online auctions and emoticons.

Text messages are a great way to keep in touch with your children (and won't they be blown away that you know the lingo?).

I'm also finding more and more home buyers and sellers prefer texting as a way of communicating with me about Crofton real estate.

Here are a few text message abbreviations to get you started:

Laugh out Loud

Some children and teens feel very confident communicating via text messages because they think of it as a secret language, not understood by adults.  I'm not too old to learn, are you?

Besides, text messaging is one more tool that sets me apart from other real estate agents in Maryland.

MW, TU 4 the 411.  LOL on AR.  BTW, have you seen that commercial on t.v. where the kids are speaking in "text talk" and the parents have no idea?

Margaret-This is so true.  My boys (14) text message me and I feel like I'm always asking what does this or that mean?  I finally pulled up a website recently and started reading through the code.  Me and my boys started laughing so hard at some of the codes that were listed. BDBI5M (Busy Daydreaming Back In 5 Minutes)  Would you have any idea what that means?  Not me.  Give me a pocket dictionary to carry around.

My text messages are like dissertations...I cannot make myself use all of the abbreviations and I'm sure that my cell provider is thrilled with my inability to do so :)

Candace - I think the teenage world would go into turmoil!

Charlie - I understand, but maybe the guide at the other end of the link will help you!

Linda - Me too - that's why I was so glad to find this guide online!

Brian - Sorry, I got ur 411, I didn't have time to figure out how to be equally cute in reply.  Maybe later (busy reading contest entries - this is  my break!)

Julie - That's what we need!

Peggy - Now all you have to do is find room for one more thing in your purse - the entire guide, printed out for reference.  It would be faster to call than look it up!

Lisa - Well, dissertation might be an exxageration, but my texts are relatively abbreviation free, too.  'Working on it though.

Bob - Thank you!  If that's not enough, there is a link to more when you click through to the guide to understanding text messaging.

Linda - When I saw this last night, I knew it was a blog waiting to happen!

Margaret~ rotflmao.  But seriously, I had to learn to text because of my kids and some of my customers doing it.  Still seems silly to me, but I take my cue from them.

Rob, That's a handy one to know.  It is one of the many on the list, if you click on that link, but it's one worth highlighting. I could probably use that more often than I do.

Scott, Thanks for sharing!  I know it took you some time to put that together.

Scott - I think this may be the first time I've ever seen someone click through on a link in someone else's blog, and copy/paste the content of the link into a comment on the same blog!  I'm not sure about the blog etiquette here - some other ActiveRainers might not appreciate it, and I don't recommend you make a habit of it.
