Here We Snow Again!

The balmy winter of 2011 has turned into the deep freeze of 2012.   In an effort to avoid a repeat of last February's snow storm, when cars were backed up and blocked behind a jack-knifed bus, the Chicago Transit Authority, (CTA), re-routed buses off Lakeshore Drive around 3pm this afternoon.  Some routes have now resumed travel on Lakeshore Drive, while a few are still re-routed onto city streets tonight.

Once the snow has subsided, snow removal becomes the maChicago Snow Removaljor order of the day.  And believe-you-me, this city takes snow removal very seriouslyChicago mayoral elections have been won and lost over poor snow removal efforts.  This year, the city has gone high-tech with it's snow removal fleet. By visiting the City of Chicago website and searching "snow plow tracking," you'll  find the new real-time  snow plow tracker at ChicagoShovels.org.  I just did a quick check and can see that at 9:20pm there were several plows working around my office, (the red dot icon.)  When you click on the blue icons, they tell you the exact address the plows are in front of.

It's been long overdue, but I could have waited a while longer for a major storm.  But it's here now, and, well, it does look pretty.  The snow did bring a change to the clothing choices of my fellow Chicagoans.  For the first time in months, I did not see anyone walking around in shorts and flip-flops.  :)

I had my trusty snow blower out and dutifully cleaned my drive, walks and patio, plus my neighbors drive and walks. They are saying it might be gone by Sunday.

Maybe I should have just waited and had a beer instead.

Hi Karen!  I hope you can still sell some houses in the snow!  Stay safe!  By the way, it was in the 50's in Atlanta today!  :-)

Burrrrr, it appears you have been getting more than your share this year!  Here in Colorado, our mountains are finally getting hit with two snowstorms over the next couple days. Should be a boost to our economy, which we all need, right?   Stay warm!!!

Used to live at 5555 Sheridan Rd. Edgewater Beach Apartments. Very familiar with Chicago winters. Moved to Florida 35 years ago because of it. I am sure it hasn't gotten any better. Wore shorts today in Destin.

Well, it is a winter time... We are expecting snow storm tomorrow, and I have scheduled 10 showings... Which I have to cancel. It will be great day to watch a movie and drink some coffee. Stay safe.

David, I'm sure you did a much better job and besides, your neighbor probably really appreciated it.

Tonya, that was us last week.  This week I'm inside and enjoying the picturesque snowfall.

Karen, no just the opposite.  This year, it's been zip, zilch, just few traces of snow and not enough to keep the joggers off the lakefront -- until tonight that is.

Bill, needless to say, I know your old neighborhood well.  This year you'd have been just fine.  Plenty of folks in shorts this winter, or what's passing for winter around here.
Last February???  Well, that was a different story.  I'm sure a lot of folks moved to FL, AZ or CA after that.  :)

Tatyana, my evening showings canceled today--good thing--but it's back at it first thing in the morning.

Dave, yep, around 6 and up to 8 inches expected in some areas.  We had a bit of snow last week and it had all melted away 3 days later.  By Sunday and on into next week the temps are expecred to rise so this may be gone by midweek.

John, you wouldn't recognize a "Chicago winter" by this season.  We've had a whopping 72 hours of "winter"  this weekend, followed by a thunderstorm last night and temps hovering around 50 degrees by sunrise.  The rain washed away most of the snow and I think I just heard another rumble of thunder tonight.
