What is it About Real Estate Agents and Dogs?

MaxThis is one of those topics I have been meaning to write about for a dog's age (sorry) and I finally have the time and inspiration to do just that.

It is my view that an inordinate percentage of real estate agents are dog lovers. Canine devotees. Poochophiles. And they aren't just dog owners, they rescue them  adopt them, and give them foster homes. When I peruse Facebook, I can bet that the people who are posting about a dog that needs a home are real estate licensees.

My very non-scientific observation in my 44 years is that a higher percentage of real estate people are dog people than any other occupation I know. Their dogs were always in their print and home magazine ads, they are on their web pages, in their cars, and often in their offices. They love their dogs. Actually, I should say WE love our dogs because I am one of them. We own a rescued 90 pound purebred German Shepherd who is a big goofy loveball, thinks I am the cats meow the greatest guy in the world, and adores the children. Before Max we had two yellow labs, Logan and Bella, and Logan was also a rescue who was nursed back from heartworm and near death.

I was around dogs when I was a kid. That's my excuse. Do dogs cause people go go into real estate, or is it something else that causes the canine mania in so many of my colleagues?

I actually think that the dog things does go hand in hand with a love of homes. Dogs make a house a home. They bring love and warmth, companionship and warm fuzzies. And when you are all about a home, a dog is not a far leap.

But I think it is deeper than that, and I think what I am about to say should make our profession proud. We have compassion. By and large we are a benevolent group. Sure, there are some crummy, mercenary shazbuts in our ranks but overall we're a home loving (often dog loving), softed hearted crowd. If we weren't we wouldn't be so devoted to our furry family.

Reading so many blogs and listening to my own team of agents, we lose sleep over our clients. We mother hen. We worry. We SO want them to win. We invest our selves and our efforts in a happy outcome for them. We literally bet our income we can make a difference for them. The public might think that all we see is a commission, but that's the minority. When we look at our clients, we see a noble mission. Is it any wonder that so many of us see the same when we look into a dog's eyes?

That's my theory- any other ideas?

Love your post, since being in America we have had cats, always put off having a dog when the kids were young and now we have the cat, but had dogs growing up and just love having a pet around, they make great people to have a conversation with and they communicate love in so many ways every day.

Aw Phil...you and Max are super and he's gorgeous!  We have two "hairy children with tails" too and they are both purebred Black and Tans, Orion's Belt and Cassiopeia...because she dropped and peed for the first 6 months with us.  Star system names for dogs in our house, with meaning.  Cassi and Orion start my day and end it and, since Orion's 11 and nearing his sunset days, I cherish time with them.  Vet said give Orion "Move Free" for humans with arthritis and an Ecotrin pain chaser daily (1 ea wrapped in butter) and have since 9 years.  His hips are going but he's moving and still active!  Cheers, doggie daddy friend!

OK, J.P. that should be worth an extra 50 points just for the dog pictures.  My last two furry boys were also rescue critters, and they are/were great.  I sometimes think the rescue dogs have a sense of a second chance at life and they show it everyday.  Good stuff!

I think that Max enjoys the fact that you actually shaved. (Im going based off of your last FB picture). :-)

Anyway, I think your observation is a good one. Its great to have compassion in this industry, whether you are selling a home for someone that recently lost their job or needs to relocate, or you are helping a buyer get into a home after a long divorce. You need compassion and you need patience.

Funny you mention the dog connection.  Also ironic I came upon your post.  I have three large rottweilers (all males) and love them as if we had the same blood.  2 of them (brothers) just turned 8 this month and I am already dreading the day when I might lose them.  I try not to think about not having them and focus more on doing more with them.  I have introduced them to many clients.  I try to include them in my daily activities as much as I can.  In fact, since I work from home alot they are by my side quite often.  I think that may be one reason agents and dogs seem to click!

Great post.

Realtors soft-hearted? or soft-headed?  Is that a typo?  Do you carry canine health insurance for Max?  Have you gotten any Vet bills, yet?  Have you bought him any clothes?  Can Max be potty trained.  I like dogs, too.  Well done.  Just call me a 'mercenary shazbut'.   Seriously, everyone loves dogs equally because they're so lovable.  Ahhhhhh.

Can we expect to see you and a dressed-up Max in a AR video post soon?

I agree 100%.  Yes, there are bad apples in our profession, just as in any other, but on the whole, I think we are one of the nicest, most dedicated and big hearted group of professionals I've ever come across.  Having a dog makes you a better person, it's really that simple.  But is it the chicken or the egg.  Are good people attracted to dogs or do dogs make us good people?  I had cats my entire life and got my first dog almost 4 years ago.  It is, hands down, the best gift I've ever given myself.

Phil - My yellow lab is at my feet right now. She spends the majority of her day right by my side. She sleeps in my office while I work and is never too far from me. I am in total agreement with your assessment. We know how important a home is and a dog just seems to be a natural part of that.

I can attest to the fact that one of the absolute biggest advocates for rescued dogs here in Tucson is a REALTOR. She is always, I mean always, arranging for a rescue or finding a home for a dog. A very special lady.

Great post J. Plilip.  I believe that dogs are a better judge of people then most people are.

J. Philip, I think everyone in the Rain knows where we stand on the topic...just ask the Office Manager of our company.

You have put the topic out for discussion beautifully.  We have many clients asking for the Office Manager before they ask for us!  That's ok, our egos will take it. ;-D

Great post!  With 10 dogs, as well as alpacas, cats and geese I would have to say that animals give far more than they receive.

Philip I do think there is a good correlation between dog owner, dog lover, and caring, kind, compassionate person translated into GREAT agent. Wonderful observation.

We love dogs!  Our dog especially :-)  I really wish that the public really did know how much we worry about them, their transaction, lose sleep trying to make sure it is all going well for them.  It's unfortunate that we have the perception of just looking for the next commission, because truly that isn't the case.  Of course it is our business and we need to make money, and we wnat to make money, but we really do care about our clients as well. -Kasey

Phil- two dogs, four cats... all rescues are in our life right now.  And there's the memory of all those who came before.  And clients... especially the young ones... my husband says I take to raise.

Never thought about it before, but it's true. There are an awful lot of dog lovers here on AR. It must be the gentle, nurturer, caretaker in us that makes us such great real estate agents.

I love my chocolate lab. We rescued him from a home where for his first 4 years he was locked in kitchen all day and not allowed to go outside because he would run off. Now, 8 months later, I hope he has no memory of that horrible home he was in. Now he has 2 acres to run on and lots of love.

Philip...Loved the cats and dogs I had before I became a Realtor but I do think many of us are very caring individuals.

I just mentioned to my husband this evening that I planned to take our pup to the office with me tomorrow.  I really miss her when I'm gone and he's going to be out playing golf in the morning so off Lindy will help me get some work done.
