If You Believe This, I've Got Some Swamp Land in Florida to Sell You

The thing about writing about what really happens to you in your life is you don't have to make up anything. It almost seems like cheating. To just write about crap that happens. No embellishments. But that's why I don't have any problem writing a daily blog or coming up with stuff to write about because life happens every single day, whether or not I agree.

It's tough choosing what to write about. So much goes on. Sometimes, it's the very last thing that happened that sticks in my head, which is what I'm choosing to talk about today. I could not believe my eyes when I read it. I'm thinking you won't believe your eyes, either, which is why I'm sharing this with you.

Some things just speak for themselves.

A reader of my About.com forum wrote a question about real estate agents and commission. Specifically about a DNA agent. There are agents for whom all of their clients are relatives. If it were not for relatives, they'd have no business at all. This particular buyer seems irate and apparently does not trust her real estate agent. Not only does she not trust her agent, but she suspects her agent is lying to her. It's bad enough to be distrustful of a stranger, but a relative?

Her agent / relative told her he can't give her all of his commission because it's against the law. She must have demanded it, for some reason.

I, on the other hand, am appalled at buyers -- related or not -- who believe they are entitled to take away our paychecks. Every so often, I run into one of them. They ask if I will do the honor of representing them to buy a home, you know, to do my job. And then, after my job is performed, they would like me to turn over my paycheck to them. No, I won't -- get out of here. Where do these people come from?

I'll tell you where they come from. From the land of freebie hand-outs and gimmes. I saw a billboard the other day advertising a banking account, and it said you get free money along with rebates. People are starting to believe they deserve something for nothing. These are strange times we are living in; people are delusional -- and we've only got ourselves to blame.

I'm pretty confident she won't like my answer when she reads it. I'm incorrigible.

Elizabeth, I'm with you. This market has brought out the worst in buyers. Hopefully their number is up with a market turnaround. Glad to hear you are sticking to your guns. Have a great year!

Elizabeth - they are also "graduates" of numerous courses teaching them "what their real estate agents do not know". And then they look at me and say they want a rebate.

I ask what rebate they have in mind, and they say rebate on the commission.

And I ask them if they are paying my commission... They do not understand that they do not pay my commission. So I tell them that when they decide to sell, we can discuss it, but it is very iunlikely I would consider it.

What a great shot of what it's like to be in Wisconsin right now, Jean. I can almost feel the earrings freezing my ear lobes.

Hey Jon: It's so bizarre. It's such an unnatural concept. There's a huge disconnect among some people. And agents who pay out at gunpoint are giving everybody a license to point a gun at our heads. I don't wanna get mugged in an alley. Go get some respect for yourself, I wanna say.

So the client thinks that her relative/agent is lying to her, meanwhile, she is trying to jack them for all of their commission?  If the relative wasn't an agent I wonder if she would have the same cahones to ask a stranger for their paycheck.

Hey Gene: Yeah, they called me a day or so ago. Wanted to verify the facts they heard from CNN in an interview I did about short sales last week. I think it's admirable that TBWS verifies. Makes it a trusted source for information.
