48 hours without Facebook...life without being connected

It is possible to actually go 48 hours without being on Facebook.  At least, it seems like it's possible.  I wasn't on yesterday and I haven't been on today.  My life isn't any different.  I don't feel less connnected and nobody has sent me email asking if I died.  So far, it seems that not being on a social network isn't so bad...for a while.

I wanted to run this experiment for two reasons:

  1. Am I addicted to social media?
  2. Will it matter to any of my "real world" relationships if I'm not on social media?

Conclusion:  I'm not addicted to social media.  That's my take-away from Friday night onward.  I checked out Facebook on Friday night along with LinkedIn and Twitter.  Nothing too interesting was going on so that's when I put my plan into action.  I didn't miss it yesterday.  In fact, I spent very little time online yesterday.  I spent it with my family.  Playing "Mexican Train" is actually more fun in person than it is online.  Who woulda thunk it?

Conclusion:  Being off social media may impact my real world relationships.  Why?  I think people have gotten so used to seeing a constant stream of updates that if they don't, they think something is wrong.  I've seen this before with other people who go offline for a while.  I won't know the full extent of whether I've been missed until I log back on.  However, since people could still send emails, texts, or call - I don't think I've missed much.

Have you ever taken a break from social media?

I feel some disconnect when I don't pop in to view, I guess I am pre occupied with posting to my page and seeing the news stories

I will go a full week many times not being on FB, Twitter, Google +. Not great for business reasons but just too hard to keep up. Been difficult to keep up on AR lately too.

Thanks for all the comments.  I just had to take a break and see what would happen.  I got back on Facebook and really hadn't missed much nor did anyone think I had fallen off the earth.  It seems that a brief break is OK from time to time.

Generally I'm not into most social media. I've never done twitter. I do have a personal and business FB page. FB is fun sometimes, but I'm really too busy. I do, although, find myself addicted to AR. I love this site.
