Is It Ok to Write About Other Things?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Personal SEO - Website SEO and Real Estate Marketing

If you have just started to blog or not too sure how to go about it, you may have been wondering if it's ok to blog about other things - Meaning ideas and topics outside the main reason you started to blog in the first place.what to blog about

If you started a blog about real estate and you're an agent, naturally most of your blogs are going to be about this. The same can be said for mortgage, staging whatever...

But first, you should figure out what you want your blog to accomplish.

Are you getting clients from it? Venting? Showing off homes or listings? Updating market reports? Displaying current mortgage trends? Discussing inspection options?

A good rule of thumb is to keep at least 60-70% of the blog about the topic at hand. This allows you to get subscribers that follow you just for that reason. If you're into selling real estate and this is your business blog, at least 6-7 out of 10 blogs should be real estate related.

Is it ok to write about other things?

For readers and search engines alike, to be well-known for a blog, you must have some similarities and consistencies to your blogs. If you're all over the board with questions, then recipes, then photos, then listings, than events, then...whatever... People may not know who you are or what you really do.

It's great to be personal though and let people know who you are. I love to cook and throw in a foodie blog once in a while or a personal day activity, but the majority of my blogs are about SEO and more specific SEO for real estate marketing. I post a lot of local posts for my clients that discuss areas, events, services and such but the majority is about SEO and online marketing.

Just be aware of what you want your blog to accomplish and have a specific goal in mind for each blog. That's why we have categories and channels to put all these in to better organize them.

Have fun with your blog but remember its purpose and keep the majority of the focus on your main topic. Google will classify you better, rank you higher and people will learn to follow you for your niche.

Hi Tammy ~

I've only been a blogger for about 4 months now.  After reading your post, I went back and looked at all of my titles and the things I have written about.  The topics pretty much run the gamut ... but I think I have a good balance of stuff.  I never thought about it before ... so thanks for the reminder to stay mindful of the content we put out there!

Tammy~~ With just getting started its hard to know how and what to write about to get started. I have had quite a few local posts that are about my area. I do need to start focusing on the market reports and buyers and sellers info. I know that. I do see it as when starting out the local posts about stuff is really much easier to write about and more interesting. ( and fun) The rest needs more thought and organizing, but will come too. Balance is important though.

This is good.  I like the idea of keeping 6-7 out of 10 posts on topic.  I don't really have any formula.  In fact I would have to go back and see what I tend to do, but I think your advice to keep in mind the purpose of your blog is great. -Kasey

I think posts for local events and businesses make a nice mix in with city real estate market reports.

As long as you don't have half your posts about goofy stuff and jokes or photos. As long as they are your area, market reports and local events, that all carries the same idea. In looking over the entire blog can I tell what you do and where you are? If so, you're good. :)

I think that in an SEO perspective, you may just want to stick to a topic that will help your target market/audience locate you faster when they search for it on the Web.  Still, a breath of fresh air ( new topics ) reflects authenticity, that you're a human writing the blog and not some article spinning software out there.  Perhaps, you can create a separate page for your other journals and have it coded in such a way that those pages won't be crawled by the searches; but still visible to your readers.

Blogging is a kind of expression but involves responsibility as it is a public platform that one uses. Blogging about things that you are not very well versed with, is fine, as long as you dont make statements that are false and mislead the readers. Otherwise blogging about your area of expertise is a fun way to express, share, learn and gather information.
