Katy Prairie Conservation Group wins Grant

The Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) group was recently awarded an Environmental Resources Management Grant which will assist in funding the project named “Katy Prairie: Best Practices “program. This award is one of three the group has won to assist with this fine project.

KPC owns and manages 14 preserves. All together these preserves cover 13,000 acres of habitat mainly on the western part of Houston (Katy and surrounding areas). Each of these preserves has a unique history, geology and wildlife and a story to tell all of us about.

The Katy Prairie: Best Practices program main objective is to preserve the Katy Prairie by removing various invasive species not native to Katy or Texas such as Chinese tallow and several other species while at the same time encouraging and helping the growth of native species. All the Wetlands and grasslands will be given a head start in the regrowth process. Conservancy volunteers will gather and collect seeds from the pristine prairie where they currently exist and plant those seeds in the various damaged areas.

The Group is asking all local residents who want to contribute but cannot physically assist to get actively involved in the ‘Great Grow Out” project which is aimed at folks growing their own prairie plants at their homes.

Anyone wanting for information; schedule of fun events; education classes or tours of the various protected areas should visit their web site.

I believe this is a first rate group and one organization that folks should consider giving their time or resources to keep their fine work going into the future. Call this GREEN if you want but KPC is all about maintaining the natural beauty, plant life and animals of the Katy Prairie.

Glad to hear the group is so active in Katy. Conservation issues are so important for our natural habitats. I sure hope the grant allows the program to flourish.

Al and Debb,

Thanks fols for your comments and I personally think the Katy Coservation group is doing an excellent job of preserving the natural beauty, wildlie and plants. Thisis a difficult job to tackle in Texas but they are active on so many fronts including teaching the kids.
