This Is the Year We Downsize, Where Do We Start?

Downsizing Your Home in or To Victoria This is one of the most commonly heard questions from Boomers and Seniors in and around Greater Victoria, that are planning to move from the big family home and downsize to a bit smaller, compact and or convenient sized home.

Off course this question is also very common for people relocating and or retiring from and or to Greater Victoria and are seeking out their options.

When we hear the "downsizing" or "moving a bit smaller" question, our answer is typically ........

Start With the Ideal Outcome in Mind.......!
Downsizing Your Home in or To Victoria
Meaning that it is likely best to try to anticipate what your future (1 - 3 - 5 - 10 years from now) Home needs and requirements will be like. We have included a few questions and options that might help you start thinking about your future needs.

  • Could you and or would you prefer to adjust your current home to be the right sized (safe, secure, practical and financially) home for you for the next 3 - 10 years and are the essential amenities, services resources within reasonable proximity ?
  • Option one might require some considerable renovations, and might also offer the option of generating some cash-flow from your home (if the part you no longer need, can be converted to a suite) but you get to stay in your own home and neighbourhood.
  • Could you and or would you prefer to move to a home type, price, size and location that offers you all that you may need now and or in the future, to maintain and or improve your quality of life as much as possible for 3-10 years?
  • Option two, may require lots of change in your lifestyle, and new things for experience (both good and bad) but may bring you closer to where your want to life your life.....

Both these questions should give you lots to think and research about.....

Downsizing Your Home in or To Victoria We add for your consideration that access to services, stores, recreational facilities, health care, centres of worship, hobbies, sports, libraries etc etc. becomes more and more important as we age. In addition, off course, there are the requirement changes inside and around your home to consider, as with steps, bathrooms, hallways and corridors, maintenance and upkeep etc etc.

Once you have come to grips with this first and very important step, in the Downsizing or living in a smaller space process, next step is what ultimately determines how much downsizing you will actually need to do.....

Downsizing Your Home in or To Victoria The Next Key Questions are...... How Much Space Do We Really Need?  a question often combined with ..... How Much Space Can We Comfortably Afford?

Topics we will touch on in a future article, however, in the mean time if you have any questions and or need assistance with your downsizing questions, moving in or to Greater Victoria, please be sure to contact Peter and Linda Pfann and ask for your Free copy of our Pfanntastic Down Sizing and Home Staging Report (only for the general public).

HI Vern,

downsizing is a real challenge for some, and for some it never really happens, as long as people are safe and not surround themselves with hazards.

HI Jeanne and Ralph,

We know the feeling, and we are doing some ourselves.... the part I find so sad, is that so much perfectly good stuff appears to be destined for the garbage heap, as nobody wants it or has a use for it.

Peter & Linda, I think that when we decide to downsize we will want to have less space to take care of but also not give up our lifestyle. So far it looks like keeping our lifestyle will cost more than we thought.

Hi Janice,

sustaining the lifestyle we are comfortable with, is a big priority for many, the challenge is to do so in a smaller foot print and lower cost

There is a certain freedom in getting rid of STUFF. We all have more than we need. It is liberating to be free of a lot of it. We downsized and I haven't missed ANY of the STUFF we let go! :)

Hi Peter & Linda

Downsizing is one way to eliminate clutter and un-needed items. Imagine if all of us got together, and put out our gently-used items, there would be so much to share with someone in need.

HI Sheri,

We have found out first hand that much of what we try to donate (even some very good stuff) is not appreciated or even accepted, but conceptually that would be a great way to pass things on.
