December is THE month for Catawba Valley Pottery Kiln Sales

I must admit that I write this post with mixed emotions.  On the one hand I want everyone to know about my favorite hobby, collecting Catawba Valley pottery, but on the other hand, the more people that learn about these sales the less likely I will get to choose a really good piece of pottery!

So, it is with great personal sacrifice that I letting you all know that in the next three weeks almost every great potter in Catawba Valley will be having a kiln sale at their homes.  Not all of the potters have announced yet but here is what I know so far:

AV_Smith.jpg

This Saturday, December 1:

Joe Reinhardt  is having his annual kiln sale at 10:00a.m. at his home on Cat's Square just down from Burlon Craig's place.  Arrive at 9:00 to preview...numbers will be drawn at 10:00.  This is Joe's only kiln sale each year and he is one of my favorites!

Saturday, December 8th:

Gary Mitchell is having his kiln at 10:00am and

Steve Abee is having his sale at his home in Lenoir at 2:00p.m.  Steve does some incredible swirl pieces!

Saturday, December 15th:

Kim Ellington will be holding his kiln sale at his home on NC10 at 10:00a.m. and

AV Smith is holding his sale at 12:00 noon in Hickory.

Information on all of these sales can be found on: CVPotter  which is a great website created by Steve Abee.  It also has some wonderful history and pictures about Catawba Valley Pottery.

Remember, all of these potters sell by a lottery system:  they have a pot full of numbers and each attendee picks one.  The number you pick determines when you get to choose your piece.  If you get a low number it is really exciting because you are one of the first to choose.  But, if you pick a high number in some cases you won't even get one piece!  Arrive early to preview the whole selection and keep a note of several of your favorite pieces as you may not get your first or even second choice.

See you on Saturday!

So cool-I have a seller who also collects these pieces-his living room was stunning.  I didn't know about the lottery system-that's crazy!  Hope you get something great for you for Christmas.

Deborah:  I thought of you when I wrote this! I'll give you an update with photos.  I can't go to all of them, darn!

Leigh: This really is lots of fun.  I have learned all about Vale and the area around Cats Square where the oldest family kilns are located.  Plus, those that attend come from all over...even out-of-state, which makes each event like a reunion...except that we are all competing to buy the same special pieces!  If you ever want to go to one let me know!

Diane: What a great hobby you have.  If I were there I would have to catch up with you to go shopping for pottery. That picture is awesome BTW.

Diane,
The pottery made in the area is fabulous and as I understand, it much sought after.  Being a collector, you did make a personal sacrifice by posting this in Localism.  Brave lady you are!  Lots of luck in getting some great pieces for your collection.

Diane, The pottery piece is amazing, I'm not at all surprised you collect it.  I love things that are so creative and almost whimsical.  Thank you for sharing this and good luck to you!

Julie:  It really is fun.  I have met so many interesting people and have learned to appreciate the way potters here stay true to the traditional ways.

Faina:  I had never seen face jugs until I move here...fascinating history to them!

Tracy:  You are welcome to join me any time!

Deborah:  You are very right, Ben Owen's Chinese Reds are fired at a lower heat...check out his website if you can...his work is incredible

Cynthia:  It was an even greater sacrifice because I posted it to my own blog and any time I write about NC pottery I get quite a few hits!

Carole:  Thanks!  I wonder if the face jugs would have bad energy because of their sometimes devilish looks?

Deborah:  I have over 100 pieces on shelves all around my office and I don't feel at all creepy but if I look at each face a get a real vibe...some are happy, some are confused and some are very evil!  By the way, I'm back from the kiln sale...I got this really cute birdhouse with a face, of course.

Diane...If you can, would you please get that green monster for me?  I can put it across the breakfast table from my husband and he wouldn't even know I was missing.

Here's hoping you get a very, very low number.

Deborah:  It is fascinating how face jugs grow on you.  I took a friend/client today who said last spring that she would never own a face jug and she bought her first one today...she and her husband both love it!  Each potter has their own distinctive style of facial expressions and details just like with any art form.

Kathleen:  I got #28 and was able to get my third choice by the time it was my turn.  I got a very cute Bird House with a face with the cutest little expression!

Here are some pictures.  The one on the left has three faces:  Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil.  The middle one is one of his Peanut men and the picture on the right is the sale spread out in his yard.

Deborah:  You are so welcome.  We had a great time and now my client/friend is hooked on collecting too!

Kathleen: I got a cute birdhouse with a beautiful dark green alkaline glaze.  I love it!  The potter said it was his favorite piece....but he may say that to everyone.

Lee:  This was one of the ways that I learned my area so fast!  Thanks for your insight.

Ginger:  Thanks!
