Craig's Classroom - Virtual Course Graphics for Bloggers 101 is underway. (course information page, pre-recorded videos, watch at your own pace, enrollment is still OPEN!) We have a nice group signed up! :) I am creating a series of classroom assignments for the students to complete the course. This post is to illustrate a report on Assignment #5 - Leveraging Resources

Find a photo on Flickr using the advanced search where creative commons licensed and allowed for "commercial use". Place the photo in your blog report post with proper attribution.

Using tags in Picasa is an essential skill once your personal library begins to grow (otherwise you will spend an inordinate amout of time looking for photos). Take a screenshot of a photo that you located by using a tags search. (PS - if you need screenshot help, watch module 10 first)

Create a custom button using cooltext.com - make it applicable to something that you would use in your signature or your profile page.

The following post is an example of what the students need to create.

(I'm including this post in my own regular blog feed as well as you all might enjoy seeing some good examples for inspiration)

Assignment #5 - Leveraging Resources

Flickr Creative Commons
I used the advanced search in flickr to find a creative commons licensed photo that was also tagged "allowed for commercial use". On the photo page, I clicked the "share" button and selected the output pixel size I needed. I pasted the HTML code into a notepad window so that I could copy the the http reference to the jpg file to the clipboard. In AR, I used the insert image button and pasted the http reference to the jpg file (note: you do not need to "upload" the photo, since it is already on the web). Below the photo you need to give a photo credit and link to the original page (you could optionally give the photo credit at the bottom of your post)

Using Tags in Picasa

The tags feature in picasa allows you to label your photos with keywords that you will be able to find the photos again in the future. You may want to keep a master document for reference of all the index keywords that you have used in the past so that you can add to existing groups and add new groups as needed. Once you have assigned keywords (tags) to photos, you leverage that to your advantage in the future by using the search box at the top of the window. Here I located a "main street" sign in my library.

Customized Button

The cooltext.com website allows you to pick a button shape and color. Then you put whatever text label you want on the button. This is a typical call to action for real estate agent blogs.

Thanks Craig! I am sure this will save me many hours in the future. I am always searching for pictures and never tag them.

Jim - it is a GREAT feature and does save time - requires a little investment of time when you upload photos to do the tagging, but it is easy and pays off later when you are not wasting all that time looking! :)

Hi Craig, I've always avoided doing this because I never knew the proper way to  use attribution. Thanks for this.

Good morning Craig,

I'm only through module 8, but that one was a favorite of mine.  I'm so excited about the changes I've made to my signature and my profile page.  I'm still working on photos and collages too.  I'm so disapointed that picnik is going away, I really enjoy that program.  Do you have one photo editing app you like the best??  I really want to start working in a program I can get comfortable in, rather than going back and forth between many.

Sandy - that's great to hear, good to see you

Cindy - Your success in my class means everything! that's terrific! Picasa is the do it all (mostly all) tool. I love that app. But carpenters carry around a toolbox of tools because there are so many different types of tasks to accomplish. Sometimes you just want a simple screwdriver and not the jumbo swiss-utility-knife. Irfanview for me is that simple tool. I have it hotkeyed, so it's like snapping my fingers and it is there instantly! paste-crop-resample-saveas-and done. Picasa might have just barely started up in the same time frame. Hope that makes sense! I can't wait to see all your finished work :) I think you are headed toward my first gold star of completion!

Craig:  I used that patio photo in one of my posts a couple of years ago - gave the photographer credit and then we had a little correspondence when I left a thank you on his Flickr account.  In fact, I have had some interesting times letting Flickr participants (including me) know when I have used their photos.

Valerie - I had noticed you on the same page and thought it was a great coincidence - I like how you interact with the photographer. I am sure they appreciate it! :)

Okay, I can see I missed something here. I've got to go check out your other posts in this series. I'm a little stretched this week but I can see this just may be what I need.
