Woodlawn - In The Shadow Of Washington's Mount Vernon

Woodlawn Alexabdria VA

Originally part of George Washington's Mount Vernon estate, Woodlawn was a 2,000 acre estate that was owned by Washington's Nephew Major Lawrence Lewis and his wife, Eleanor "Nelly" Custer Lewis.

Dr. William Thornton, architect of the US Capitol, designed the federal style home. Construction began in 1800 and was completed in 1805. During the Lewis' ownership the plantation work was done by more than 100 workers, 90 of whom were slaves.

In 1846 the home was sold to two Northern families opposed to slavery who sold farm lots to free black and white farmers.

Severely damaged by an 1896 hurricane the home was in serious disrepair. A succession of private owners during the 20th century restored it to its' early beauty. In 1952 Woodlawn and the remaining 126 acre estate became the property of The National Trust For Historic Preservation.

The home is currently undergoing window restoration and is closed to the public until March, 2013.

Karen,

Such an impressive home... Hard to believe 90 slaves on the property.  But you are lucky to live close to these homes so rich in history!

Have a great day

Rob

Karen, That is certainly a great looking estate, one very worthy of the Historic Preservation Trusts efforts.  Great background information as well!
