Making A Difference: Do something memorable!

By

In planning for the holidays, remember, it is your presence (not your presents) that makes the most difference! Now, don't get me wrong: I like and appreciate both, but I have noticed it is the shared moments that last in my memory much longer than what someone gave me last year. Can you remember the gifts you got last year? Plan to do something special this year with those you love.

One year, one of my friends rented a limo for Christmas Eve and took her family on a tour of one of Tucson's most decorated neighborhoods, Winterhaven. After they oowed and ahhed, they had a picnic in the desert! I imagine they are all still talking about the Christmas we rented the limo!

One of the great things about giving yourself is that it doesn't have to cost a lot. Maybe, a coupon book for a monthly lunch to an older relative. Or babysitting coupons for the one's who never get a night out away from the kids. Or, maybe it is spending a part of the holiday singing carols at a retirement home or hospital. One year, I got a bunch of $5 bills and left them on the windshields of some cars....

Have fun this season. Don't stress. Do something memorable!

When I started reading this post I waited for the challenge to list 100 memorable gifts of presence vs. presents!  I read that challenge in the subtext ... you can't fool me!!!

I don't know if I can do another list!! Lists about gratitude and smiles are filling a blog ... maybe I should start a list on another blog!!! My poor FAT Lady Blog has been sorely neglected ... she needs a list like this for the holidays. I will keep you posted.

Joanne-great post and so true...most of the memorable responses I have gotten from people with gifts are something homemade or doing something fun! Happy Holidays...

Joeann, you're right on point here.

It's so true, we always remember moments rather than things.

Hi Joeann,

Great Post and i agree with you, we should all do something special for someone not only for the holidays, but everyday or when ever we can, especially the ones who need it most. Happy Holiday.

Joeann,

Focusing on 'presence' rather than 'presents' is the key to celebrating a successful Christmas...We celebrate Jesus' birthday...but no one ever buys Him anything!!! Thanks,   Fran

Hello Joeann- excellent idea- I agree the gift of one's TIME to another is very valuable- we like to take clients/associates out to lunch this time of year and catch up on their lives and enjoy their company etc..than give a pen that will run out of ink or a popcorn bin that will be consumed and forgotten LOL

Sincerely,

Grace Safrin

p.s. thanks for commenting on my post today and please note I originally responded to you by misspelling of all things....YOUR NAME - I am so sorry....I corrected it tonight( I confess I am a 2 finger typer).

Fran you have a good list started there...I like the idea-sorta like the Facebook "add 3 words" app--of challenging each person who replies to share one idea!

Joeann -  I prefer the moments with friends and family far more than any gifts. I do like your idea about the $5 bills. What a pleasant surprise for those who received anonymously.

Hi Joanne,   Great idea.  Be a secret gift giver.  When going through the drive through pay for the next car behind you.  In a crowd, approach the people who are alone or not engaged in the conversations.  Read to the children in your family.  Find those who have no one to share a meal with you, invite as many as you can and make it a real celebration.  Survey your pantry and donate food items to the local food shelter or mission.  Volunteer to serve.  You have me on a roll, I think I will ask my family members to create 100 ways to make a difference.  I wish all of you the very best life has to offer.  Make it fun!

Hi Sharon! What great ideas! Thanks for jumping in and playing and I'd love to see this spread to your family! It was also wonderful to see you at the WCR Installation. If there is anything I can do for you guys in NV this year, just ask!
