'My commission expires ...'

My notary commission expiration date is something I'll never forget, because I have written it thousands of times.

Not anymore.

Colorado notary stampI purchased a notary stamp that includes my commission expiration date on it. I received it today. I purchased it through the American Association of Notaries. It was reasonably priced and it comes with a lifetime replacement guarantee.

Colorado notary law is very specific about how the notary stamp should be made. The only words that can be contained within the outline of the seal are the name of the notary, according to their official signature, the words 'Notary Public' and 'State of Colorado' (CRS 12-55-112). For example:

Colorado notary seal

But it is permissible to have a stamp with the commission date on it, as long as it is outside the outline of the seal:

Colorado notary seal - with commission expiration date

This is a lot less writing that I'll have to do, and should save a lot of time in closings.

In Michigan our stamp must have the county and the expiration date (your commission is in your county of residence) You also have to state the county you are acting in, even if it's the same as your commission. All of this can be on your stamp.

I had one with my commssion expiration date on it and the title companies and lenders still required tht it be hand written. I felt it was not worth it this time around.

I am on several notary blogging websites and have read posts from title company employees stating that one of their biggest pet peeves with notaries is that they do not also write in the commission expriation date, "they just stamp it"

I have also seen instructions that tell the notary to write the commission expiration date, even if it's on their stamp.

I'm thinking that I will use this on documents that don't already have the words 'My commission expires:' I do a lot of notary work for the general public. I can use it for that.

The Sate of California, Secretary of State requires the notary's commission expiration date to be indicated on the stamp. It's unfortunate that I wasn't aware of the American Association of Notaries last week,  because I would have preferred to order a stamp that's reasonably priced, with a lifetime replacement guarantee. I am current member of the National Notary Association.
