The Philadelphia International Flower Show Attracts the Suburban Crowd

http://actvra.in/wQl

AIFD exhibitThe Philadelphia International Flower Show is in progress this week at the Convention Center in Center City with the theme of Hawaii:Islands of Aloha.

A friend and I thought we would try taking the SEPTA train from Elwyn, Pennsylvania for a change and to eliminate driving in city traffic and paying city parking fees. That worked out pretty well, thanks to another friend who advised me to go after 2 pm, by which time some commuting students would be vacating their parking spaces at the station lot.

We arrived just as many chartered bus crowds were leaving, and only had a crowd at the first exhibit, by the American Institute of Floral Designers (left).

For me, one of the most interesting elements was how the designers chose to mount and display their flowers. Below, you see an orchid hanging in a little lucite swing, then a "lily shower"  with lilies in their little glass tubes of water hanging on clear wire and the flower heads backed by lucite squares hung separately, so they wouldn't flop over. The last picture has orchids which were lighted from below with blue lights. Interesting!  The show is open until Sunday, March 11.For info see http://www.theflowershow.com/home/index.html

It attracts people from all over and for me the bonus was the theme, Hawaii. I love Hawaii, especially Kaui.

Hi Carolyn, This is perhaps one of the most important and outstanding flower shows in the world. They made this important because they have the most creative and outstanding participants making it happen. They enjoy a well deserved reputation.

William-It certainly attracts attention from near and far. I did hear a comment from a local horticulturist friend who complained that it offered little in the way of garden ideas for locals, which is true (except for the vendors selling all kinds of stuff--and I found a special on my favorite Foxgloves gardening gloves)

I've only been to this event one time... walked my shoes off.... but the ideas I got which could be used around the home were fantastic.  Wife wanted to go this year, my feet said no.... Perhaps we will go again next year... :)

Jon-This year there were not that many ideas for home gardens due to the Hawaiian theme, but of course a lot of vendors were there.
