Convention tips

With Family Reunion around the corner don't miss the opportunity to promote yourself.   Here are a few pointers I got from Rich Lombardi in California.
In this email I am addressing the number one essential networking tool...your business card...  The impact your card could make you thousands in referral commissions.

Inspect it carefully from the eyes of someone that doesn't live in your town.  I've gotten back from conventions and look at the cards and have no clue who the card came from.  Pictures are a great memory jogger, but make sure the picture resembles you on a very good day... IN THIS DECADE!

If the town you work is a few miles outside Omaha... Make sure you mention Omaha on your card.  Let's face it don't make fellow agents work too hard to send you a referral!  Let's say several months down the road an agent you met at Family Reunion calls to send you a referral but, it's for the far side of Omaha that you don't work, you still can strengthen two relationships by helping to place the referral to an agent you work with on the other side of town.  That's what networking is about!

Am I suggesting that you spend $40 or $50 for cards just for Family Reunion?  I think it's a great investment.  I think there are only a few essential ingredients...

1.) Name and Designations
2.) Picture of you
3.) Areas you work (or nearby major city)
4.) Website
5.) Email
6.) ONE phone number (toll free number is best)
7.) Mention FAMILY REUNION 2007
8.) Leave the back of the card blank and unlaminated for the receiver or yourself to write notes

Notice what I left out...

Office address: The office address may confuse the agent as to the areas you actually work

The other 8 phone numbers/fax:  Although, having this information on your cards in the "home" environment is very practical, in the networking environment it is more about where you work than having 8 ways of contacting you.

Well, I hope this helps to get you thinking ahead to Family Reunion and makes it a profitable, as well as educational & motivational experience!

Please note that in Florida we must use our office number as recorded with the Florida Real Estate Commission.

So who is going to Family Reunion this year.  I have Valentine plans with my husband and won't be able to attend this year, but may send some promotional items with a friend all the same.

Nice suggestion on streamlining and customizing our business cards for conventions. I've got a couple of other projects to get finished for Family Reunion ... and just six weeks left to go!

I took the At Home with Diversity course from NAR. One of the things I got out of it is how people from Japan view business cards in a different light than Americans. The business card should be properly presented and we are to never, never write on them. Most of us would not mind, but I made it a habit to try to avoid writing on people's cards since I don't want to ruin them either. Instead, I keep notes and jot them down, then use a business card scanner to scan in my cards later that day. The card scanner software has a notes field that can be exported along with the other data.
