Chapmans Mill Wheels

The gears and wheels inside Chapman/Beverly Mill in Prince William County Virginia kept this historical mill working starting in 1724.  The mills was an important part of the growth of the Shenandoah Valley.  Farmers from the valley brought their wheat and corn to be ground at the mill and then it was transported to Alexandria VA where it could be sold and shipped to Europe.

The mill was the site of a strategic the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap and the mill was burned in 1862.  It was purchased and restored by the Beverly family in 1876.  Vandals burned the mill in 1998.  The mill has been stablized so visitors can safely walk inside the mill and check out the incredible stone walls and old equipment still in place.

Cindy, nice slice of history from Prince William County. I bet the wheel and gears were all made in America, as small as we were back in 1724!

Great piece of history.  It's a shame it was vandalized.  I love these old mills.

Hi Cindy,It is great to know that the mill is being preserved. As the next generations come into life they will need to understand the progress of man that lead to the electronic and digital  transformation that originated in our history with the  mechanical one. Nicely captured.

Dan-the fact that even the exterior of the mill is still standing after being burned twice is a testiment to it's strength.

Emily-I imagine all of the original mill came from locally stone and wood.  The area has huge boulders around.

have a giant wheel that looks very similar to this but it serves as decor. glad to read that the mill has been preserved so the same doesn't happen to this one.

Margie-I think it would be a little heavy to try and carry out.  I'm sure a few smaller ones disappeared before they secured the site.
