Where did you go to get your conceal and Carry Permit?

By

I have written before about safety and what to do about protection.

A friend told me I was over the top!  "Do you know what the chances really are of needing to carry."

Well, he just called me the other night..."Bill, where did you go to get your conceal and carry permit...I need one fast!"

My friend is a plumber in an area not know for violent crimes.  But when he went into a vacant house to do some work for the new owners...He heard come commotion in the basement.  He yelled down and heard people going out the basement door.

3 guys were running fast.  So fast they left behind a lot of stuff.  Including 3 handguns and over $10,000 in drugs (Per the cops).

All he could think of is that the ending could have been a lot worse.

I told him that I would tell him where to get his permit...IF...he also signed up for classes on using a gun.  (He agreed)

I have been called crazy and an over re-actor to this safety thing, but I know 3 people in the last year that have run into a situation where having protection may have helped.

AGAIN...I am not saying everyone needs to get out and buy a gun...just if you are going to carry any protection, mace or whatever....Learn how to use it!!!!!

William - I absolutely agree.  Having a carry permit does NOT mean you are protected or can protect yourself.  You need to learn how to use it and then go to the range AT LEAST once per quarter to fire off a box of ammo.  Muscle memory is very important when it comes to protecting yourself.

When the adrenaline kicks in something else has to kick it and override it.  That's the "muscle memory" of knowing just how press the trigger and fire off a shot.  You need to know how hard to squeeze in order to fire, how to adjust your aim after each shot, etc.  This is a gun, not a camera -- point and shoot will not get the job done.

One of the things I remember most about learning to shoot and protect myself is this:  If you are in a situation and pull a gun, you had better be prepared to use it.  If not, the bad guy will take it away from you and use it - ON YOU!!!

I carry and I know how to use it!  (I'm just saying.....)

Bill,  In a prior job I was required to carry.  I keep putting off getting the permit because the gun I have now a Beretta 40 Cal is not a good carry gun.  Great for in home protection but too heavy to carry concealed.

My son wants me to get one that is about the size of a 38 but shoots shot gun shells. You reminded me I've been putting this off too long.

He is fortunate that he did not get shot.  I guess that is what he decided.

Agree with all of that. If you are going to carry you better be proficient on how to use it and prepared. Nothing is wrong with protection its when its abused and used to assault that provides the gateway to problems. Also over the top? I dont see that, I would call it being wise and prepared and if others call that over the top then I guess they will be calling you when they run into an issue

William, this is something that I've been thinking about for a while now. I had shoulder surgery about 2 months ago and I still couldn't fight my way out of a paper bag. Once it get's back to "normal," I'm going to go take the class to get my CCW. I'll go to the shooting range on a regular schedule to make sure I know what I'm doing. Thanks for the blog, buddy.

I have thought of getting one but am afraid I might use it when I shouldn't. In 9 years I have never been in a bad situation. If I don't feel right I just tell them "not me" find some one else.

I have an uncle that carries ALL the time.  He was putting gas in his car when a guy walked up to him and stopped at the front of his car and said give me your wallet.

My uncle just pulled back his jacket so his pistol showed and the guy ran like hell.  Sometimes it just needs to be seen to change a situation.  (It could be for good or bad.) That is why training is a must!

I know where to go to get my conceal and carry.... but you are really right in that classes are a good thing with it! I took gun training, but it was a longgggggggggggggggggggggg time ago. And, there have been more than one situation where I felt that I wasn't alone in a home. I always wonder afterward if my premonition was right.

Bill, something similar happened to me this week and I've thought about it long and hard.  Looks like I'm going to be checking things out in the AM.

I love the response people give when they say "how many times have you had to use it?" If i use it once, and it saves me from harm, then once is enough....never be too prepared

In our county you either have to have been a licensed hunter for a number of years or you have to take the class. However, taking the class doesn't mean you've taken the time to practice - that's a very good idea too.

I think this would be a good class for high schools - if all citizens were likely to be carrying, then crooks wouldn't be so bold.

The statistics prove it: Few guns - more violent crime. More guns - less violent crime.

I have never thought about carrying a gun.  Don't know why.  But I can see why it makes sense for many to do so.

It's up for vote in the IL legislation right now, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Would be better that we didn't have to carry a gun that's for sure!

There have beena few times I wish I had had one with me.  Turned out ididn't need it, but at the time I wasn't so sure.  This was in a great neighborhood also.
