There are a lot of Churches and Organizations that help feed those who need assistance in Douglas County KS. Most of them are in Lawrence, and are spread out pretty fairly across the town, allowing for easy access for any transportation situation those in need may have. Below are the local Lawrence, KS area Food Pantries. Some have requirements and are only open certain days/times.

Food Pantries
ECKAN/Just Food: 856-7030; 1200 East 11st St., Lawrence

  • Mon 1:00-7:00 pm; Tue, Thu, Fri  9:00 am – 12:00 pm and 1:00 – 4:00 pm; CLOSED WEDNESDAYS
  • Requires picture ID; social security number requested; must meet income guidelines
  • Can use once every 30 days but can also pick up bread and produce daily
  • Mobile Food Pantry: 2nd Monday of the month from 1:00 pm until the food is gone; must present proof of Douglas County residency (During hot months, call for info on possible time change.)

The Salvation Army: 843-4188; 946 New Hampshire St., Lawrence

  • Hours: Mon, Wed, Fri 10:00 am – 12:00 pm; Tue, Thu 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
  • Requires picture ID, social security number; no income guidelines
  • Can use once per month

Ballard Community Center: 842-0729, extension 101; 708 Elm St., Lawrence

  • Hours: Mon – Fri 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • Requires picture ID, social security or ITIN number; must have taxable income and meet income guidelines
  • Can use once every 30 days
  • Mobile Food Pantry: 9:30 am until food is gone at 4-H Fairgrounds Buildings 1 & 2 – call for dates, as they rotate

Penn House: 842-0440; 1035 Pennsylvania St., Lawrence

  • Hours: Mon – Fri 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Requires picture ID, social security or ITIN number; must have taxable income and meet income guidelines
  • Can use once every 30 days

Trinity Interfaith Pantry: 843-6166; 1027 Vermont St., Lawrence

  • Hours: Tue 2:30 – 4:30 pm; Sat 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
  • Requires picture ID, proof of residency; no income guidelines
  • Can use once a month

First Baptist Church: 843-0020; 1330 Kasold Dr., Lawrence

  • Hours: Wednesday, noon - 2pm, 5:30 - 7pm
  • No requirements
  • Can use more than once a month if needed

Heartland Community Health Center (formerly The Leo Center): 841-7297; 1 Riverfront Plaza, Suite 100, Lawrence

  • Hours: Mondays 1-3pm by appointment only (to make appointments for Mondays, call 841-7297 ext. 223), Saturdays it is open from 9:00 a.m. to noon, first come, first serve. 
  • No requirements
  • Can use once per month

Heritage Baptist Church: 887-2200; 1781 E 800 Rd., Lawrence

  • Hours: Call for an appointment
  • No requirements

Stull United Methodist Church Food Pantry: 887-6521;1596 E. 250 Rd., Lecompton

  • Hours: 1st and 3rd Thursdays 7:00 – 9:00 pm
  • Rural Mobile Food Pantry: 4th Thursday of the month 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm
  • New Life Assembly of God: 785-594-3045;118 5th St., Baldwin City (Baldwin City residents only, please)
  • Hours: Mon - Thu 8:00 am – 12:00 pm
  • Rural Mobile Food Pantry: 4th Thursday of the month 10:00 – 11:00 am

First Christian Church:  843-0679;1000 Kentucky (go to S parking lot and use back ramp), Lawrence

  • Hours: 3rd Thu, 1:00-4:00 pm
  • Located at No requirements
  • Can use monthly

Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church: 843-0442; 802 West 22nd St., Lawrence.

  • Hours: Mon 11 am – 4 pm (except for holidays)
  • No requirements (fill out application when visit)
  • Can use every 30 days

Kitchens
Jubilee Café: 856-9521; Located in the basement of First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont, Lawrence

  • Tue & Fri 7:00 – 7:45 am
  • No requirements
  • Can use twice a week

L.I.N.K.: (Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen): 331-3663; 221 West 10th St., Lawrence

  • Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday 1:00 - 2:00 pm

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 1:00 - 2:00 pm

USDA Commodities
TEFAP: The Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is available to Douglas County residents who meet a certain income guideline (for example, $1,180 max/month for a one-person household). ECKAN/Just Food distributes these commodities on the fourth Thursday of each month from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The quantity and types of food items vary from month to month. If you’re interested, please call 856-7030 for more information, including pick-up sites in other Douglas County cities.
CSFP: The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is for these low-income individuals living in Douglas County:
those who are 60 years old or older
children age 1 to age 6 (who are not on the WIC program)
post-natal mothers for up to one year
Applications are available at Just Food in Lawrence.  Once eligibility is established, it must be recertified twice yearly.  CSFP commodities are available on the 4th Monday of each month.  Pick-up sites in Lawrence are Ballard Center, Penn House, Douglas County Senior Services, Vermont Towers, Prairie Commons, Babcock Place and ECKAN/Just Food.  There are also pick-up sites in Eudora, Lecompton, and Baldwin City.
SNAP (formerly Food Stamps)
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps low-income people and families buy the food they need for good health. Benefits are provided on an electronic card that is used like an ATM card and is accepted at most grocery stores and at the Lawrence Farmers Markets. Questions?
