Murder In Sanford Florida - Speak Up And Speak Out!

Have you been following the case of Trayvon Martin?

This is the young black 17 year old boy who was unarmed and shot down by a self appointed neighborhood watch captain.  The community was a gated community in Sanford Florida.  The young man was visiting his father.  He walked to a local 7-11 and was coming back through the parking lot, when accosted by George Zimmerman a self appointed community watch dog.

  • Trayvon was armed with a cell phone, bag of Skittles and a can of soda.  Zimmerman was armed with a 9 mm.

911 recordings show the police dispatcher told Zimmerman not to pursue this young man.  To stand down!  Clearly heard on recordings is Trayvon begging for someone to help him. Trayvon was on the cell phone to his girlfriend telling her what was going on. He had done nothing wrong and was scared because he was being pursued.

  • Zimmerman did not stand down.  A scuffle ensured instigated by Zimmerman and he shot the boy in the chest.

Trayvon had never been in any kind of trouble.  Was a model young man and good student. It has taken social media and the power of the public to make officials in Sanford Fl act.  There has yet to be a wholehearted investigation launched by the Mayor, City Manager, County Supervisors or the Police Chief.

  • The defense Zimmerman is using is a 7 year old law called "Stand Your Ground".  The law was loosely written and various interpretations make it difficult to get a clear read on the boundaries. According to written accounts murder in domestic cases has escalated since this law was passed.

I am a supporter of the 2nd Amendment.  Like Charlton Heston said "You can pry my gun from my cold dead hands."  I believe in self defense and the right to bear arms.  I understand the "Castle Law" and the obligation it places on the gun owner.  The Castle Law does not apply to the street.

  • I do not believe in loose canons or self appointed vigilantes.  I have carried concealed both in employment and personally.  The gun is for self defense not anger management.

In Florida Security Officers or those who act in that capacity, are required to pass testing and carry a special "carry" license after they have passed a background check.  Did George Zimmerman possess the credentials required to use a handgun in the defense of non-personal property or other non-family members?

  • I lived in Sanford Florida for more than 7 years.  There are and have been racial tensions in some parts of the community. I can't really explain or define it.  Suffice to say that the "old timers" were not the problem.
  • I lived and ran a boarding kennel within 1/2 mile of a large black community called Mid-Way. It had existed for generations.  I never had one ounce of trouble.  I was never in fear for my safety. People would walk along my road and wave.  I'd drive through their community, and we'd exchange smiles and waves.  We lived around each other harmoniously.

Go into town and the climate changed. Perhaps it was the "newcomers" who gave everyone else a bad rap.  Robberies, murders, fights, slurs all took place in or around the town.  I never locked my car at my house.  I locked it just running into 7-11 for coffee.

  • Can I believe this murder was racially motivated?  YES - I believe it was.  I believe George Zimmerman should be arrested for murder.  I believe the parents of this young man should sue the homeowners association for knowingly allowing an un-qualfied, un-vetted self appointed guard to roam their property armed with a gun.

Yesterday the County Supervisors voted 3-2 in a non-vote of confidence regarding the Police Chief.  The Police department is being accused of corruption and covering up the episode.  Things never change.

Do I believe that this Police Department is corrupt?  Been there and seen it first hand. When I lived there I was an appointee of the County Superviors and served on a County Board.  Nothing has changed. Government in Sanford has always been the "Good Ole Boy" system.

The Police Chief should be fired IMMEDIATELY.- TODAY!

  • A background investigation was launched by the Police Chief into the background of Trayvon.  No background investigation was ordered into the background of George Zimmerman.  Actions speak louder than words.

If you have not read about this story please go to the local newspaper accounts. Go to Facebook and Twitter and sign the petitions supporting the investigation and arrest of George Zimmerman.

  • This case should wrench your heart out.  The senseless murder of a nice young man just because he was Black and he was ThereAs a society we should never tolerate racial or ethnic hate crimes of any sort.

Florida Governor Rick Scott has ordered the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate this.  He personally addressed a crowd of Trayvon Martin supporters at the Florida Capitol here in Tallahassee yesterday.

My heart goes out for young Mr. Martin and his family.

My disdain goes out to Mr. Zimmerman (I have dealt with HOA's and COA's for years; I have met a lot of these petty tyrants).

But my concern, Bonnie, is that the Left will use this incident to erode our Rights, including Florida's "Castle Doctrine".  If the Obama/Holder Justice Department decides to step into it, they may trample all over the citizens of our great State.

Fred:  I agree with you.  The overzealous "volunteer" was NOT a volunteer as you ordinarily apply the definition.  He took it upon himself to patrol the grounds as a "self appointed" neighborhood watch commander.  He was not asked to do it from everything I have read.  All the while the HOA and other residents were well aware.

This was totally wrong.  The guy was not in danger, told to stay away and still pursued the suspect and then shot him.  Jail is where he belongs.

Fred. The author of the stand your ground law said this case does not qualify. There is so press on this right now I highly doubt Holder will get involved. I believe Zimmerman would have to have a class D firearms permit to use his personal weapon for the benefit of other individuals or a corp. the primary role he took upon himself was the protection of others. He was there for that purpose therefore the stand your ground requirement cannot be met

I believe in the Right ot bare arms to protect yourself and property.  But when you are the pursuer and chase the person down, (especially after the plice tell you to stop) you have crossed the line and you make it harder for those of us who use common sense.  He belongs in JAIL!

Randi  It was clear he was told to leave the boy alone.  I have more information I'll post later.  This Zimmerman is a nut case.

Florida Governor Appoints Special Counsel re: Trayvon Martin

Since "Race" is already a prominent part of this story, let me mention [for non-Floridians] that:

Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll, who will head the Governor's Task Force, is African-American.

You might all be interested to know that the Chief who stepped down was only on the job one year.  He replaced another Chief who also stepped down due to a similiar incident.  I heard this on Fox today but cannot find an article

Hello Bonnie.....

Thank you for taking the time and the effort to write your blog.

Our country has come a long way from lynchings, tar and feathers, and cross burning.

We now have something new. It is pandering to the NAR. Politicians can't object to supporting their causes, otherwise they are accused of being soft on crime, and won't be reelected.

If one seems to believe that this case in Sanford is unusual, it is not. People don't need to carry firearms to make them feel safe. The reply is usually,  then only the criminals will carry guns.

Again, thank you for sharing with us,  the good old days of living in Sanford.

RJ  Thank you for commenting.  If you remember the good old days of Sanford, perhaps you know also that the prior Police Chief back in 2010 resigned because his son was caught on video beating a black youth and an attempted cover up took place.

I see today that Norm Wolfinger was asked to step down in the investigation.  He has been a fixture there since the mid 80's.  Not one of my favorite people.

I do not doubt that these things go on unreported around the country. All the more reason to demonstrate en mass that these behaviors are not tolerated by the majority of Americans.

In Northeast Pa we have had our own racial killings.  Law enforcement and the  community was swift to act and no cover up took place.

As you gleaned from my comments I support gun ownership.  A crazy like Zimmerman should not be used to judge the tens of thousands of American who are conscientious gun owners.  A gun is only a lethal weapon when someone pulls the trigger.

I consider a prey dog more of a danger to society than a gun.  A biter is single minded, not capable of logical thought, but very capable of killing a human being.  Dog attacks are far more common than shootings.

I heard Geraldo's comments about the hoodie yesterday and NEVER made the connection to the attire being a cause of concert for Zimmerman; however, it makes sense on a primary level if defense attorneys continue to say a woman "asks for it" when she is raped BECAUSE of the clothes she was wearing

Wallace:  I heard he was wearing a hoodie as well.  It has not been established whether or not he had the hood up.  With the temperature in Florida I'm wondering if he would have put it up since it has been very hot.

Marco:  I'm with you.  This is gut wrenching day after day watching the parents trying to get justice as they should.  It is heartbreaking thinking about the wanton murder of that young man.

Bonnie, I can tell you that Angela Corey is a straight up tough attorney. I have met her and I voted for her. She is honest and the investigation will be fair. Something doesn't sound right in this case and Angela and her team will ferret it out.

Frank and Sharon.  thanks for commenting.  I see you are Florida residents.  I'm about to post another blog.  Amazing that no one in the media has caught on yet about gun licensing in Florida.

I had no faith in Wolfinger. I had my own run in with him when my home was robbed in Sanford.  He's part of the good ole boy system.  I'm glad he is not involved.

This case is haunting.  I want to see justice done for this victim whose young life was snuffed out without provocation.  Without a gun Zimmerman could have over powered this kid.  Senseless murder.
