Red Solo Cup! You P*** Me Off!

Now, why would I be ranting not only about an awesome party song, as well as a veritable icon of recreational fun?

Because a visitor to my neighbor's house (you may recall I live on an itsy bitsy 3 home cul-de-sac, so I can Gladys Kravits easily) attempted to put several Red Solo Cups in my recycling bin this AM.

What's the beef? He's recycling you say.

RED SOLO CUPS CAN ONLY BE RECYCLED BY WASHING AND REUSING.

Yes, they are a #6 plastic, which is not a recyclable plastic. Only 1-3, and under special circumstances are 4&5 recyclable in most curbside recycling collections.

Please, correctly reuse your Red Solo Cups for future partying!

Here's the clean version of the song, if you want the unedited version, you know how to find it.

Good Morning Carol, maybe you could talk to the person and let him know your feelings so he doesn't do that again. Win/Win!

I'd never heard that song before.  Maybe the visitor didn't know the recycling rules--and you gave me a great idea for a future post.

Kim - I did, through my kitchen window...think I scared him, but I told him they weren't recyclable and he should find another place to dispose of them....

I had no idea they were not recyclable.  We have family or friends over almost every weekend for poolside cookouts and we hand out Solo Cups BUT we wash those bad boys and reuse them until they crack.  I was just being Frugal..turns out I helped the enviroment too.

I didn't know you could only put certain kinds of plastic in recycle bins. I wish our County would wake up to the benefit of recycling, but they haven't. For now, we haul our trash to the dump site and all "household" trash goes into the same bin. Things like appliances, metal, and wood have a separate space and I think they are doing something to recycle them. I hope so.

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

Carol I am glad you let your neighbor know right away your dissatisfaction.  Don't let those things fester.  I will trade you your red cup dispenser for my neighbor who drops their dog's poop bag at the end of our driveway.  Jeez.

Norma: Maybe he didn't know; since this post I have learned a large number of people really do not know what they can and what they cannot recycle.

Michael: Congrats on being both frugal and environmental!

Marte: I forget how fortunate I am to have curbside recycling pickup; my friend has a house on Nantucket, and she has to do the same as you; except they have to use clear garbage bags, and if the dump police see ONE recyclable, the whole bag must be emptied with the one item removed...

Larry: I have since thought of what is probably a more suitable post title...sorry, it obviously hit a nerve yesterday morning. Why don't you relocate your neighbor's "gifts" to his front porch?????

Morning Ms. Carol~ people have their certain things they can come unglued on.  I have several and so does the wife so we just don't pull each others trigger.  Some people have no common sense and this sound like one of them or they just don't care.

You go girl! Unfortunately, there are neighbors like you have, everywhere. Hopefully at some point you can have a breakthrough with them.

James: Very true. It did inspire me to have someone come talk to our local Realtor group about what can and cannot be recycled, since I've learned many do not really know.

Conrad: I know, why do they have to hang out with my neighbor???

Joe: I know.....

In my not so humble opinion, plastic that cannot be recycled should not be produced!!!!

Carol ...He probably thought he was doing something right ...most people who recycle need to learn all they can before they start!  Nice post!

You certainly are proving to be a source for information needed by all.  I did not know that the red cups could not be recycled.

Great post.

I agree that if it is not possible to break it down it should be unlawful to make...other countries have huge recycling costs built into the production if they do not meet re-cycling guidelines...what is wrong with the U.S.- Profit!
