Christmas and the Price of Freedom

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams West Sound Realty

As Christmas rapidly approaches, I don't necessarily have 'visions of sugar-plums' dancing in my head, but I am getting very excited at the prospects of being reunited with treasured loved ones. Our daughter, Emily, will finally be back home and Aunt Nancy from Chicago will be with us as well. It promises to be an exceptionally special Holiday Season!

One of the things that I particularly appreciate about living here in Kitsap County WA is being part of such a large and valued military community. The Kitsap Peninsula is home to Naval Base Kitsap, comprised of installations in Bremerton, Bangor, and Keyport - including the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bangor Subase, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. Many of my most enjoyable past clients have been active or retired military.

Many times, we tend to take our freedom and liberties for granted. Regardless of your own personal opinions or attitudes regarding the War in Iraq, we all owe a tremendous debt of thanks and gratitude to the men and women in uniform who willingly and selflessly sacrifice so much in order for us to have 'so' much. These brave and dedicated protectors spend their Christmas Holidays far from home and family so that the rest of us have the blessing and good fortune to do so.

So as Christmas Day approaches, I extend a personal, heartfelt "Thanks!" to the men and women of our Armed Forces. To all of you, have a very Merry Christmas, and God Bless Us, Everyone!

Rich, well said and "Thank You" for saying it. I'm sure living so close to the base and shipyard really keeps it in the forefront for you and others in the area. My thoughts are with all the families who will spend Christmas without one or more of their loved ones.

Indeed and we can't say it enough.  Those brave young men and women who devote years of their lives with so little promise of reward keep us safe every single day.

Thanks Rich.

Rich,

What wonderful sentiments.  I am grateful my son came home from Iraq and is here with us.  My heart aches for those parents who were not so lucky.

Please lift up your prayers for the parents and survivors of loved ones who lost their lives in the war.

God Bless you and your family Rich.

Thanks Rich, my son flies back to Nashville tomorrow and then goes to Navy bootcamp on the morning of the 20th, I've been feeling a little blue, but I know it is a good choice for him. He will go to A school in CA, where Mana lives in Ventura County.

Missy - My experiences and memories of boot camp were some of the best in my life. The day I graduated was one of the proudest days of my life. It will be a good experience for your son!

I sure know what it was like ....the day that war was declared....my son was on the USS Kitty Hawk and already in the Persian Gulf......and it was his birthday....March 19. Do I support the troops...of course I do! They aren't doing all this for their health.

Rich, such an important reminder. Our neighbor will be gone for Christmas, and it is a blessing to be able to "support" his wife, and their dog while he is underway. Freedom is not free, and everyday we see what the cost is to one family.  Love that photo.

I agree that we do take our freedom for granite, but I have one hand up. My brother in law has been in the army for 22 years and I have know him for 18 of them. So, I support him and I know I have my freedom because of him.

Great post.

Great photo and superb sentiments well expressed here. Spent a good deal of my childhood overseas at military bases, and saw first hand how much those guys appreciate our support here at home.

During the holidays we should all remember those who are defending our freedom and away from their families.  Great reminder post.

Rich -

Great words.  I hope that by seeing this, the men and women in the Armed Services know that we ALL support them.  Sitting here on the warm couch, in this warm house...  we are thankful and indebted to everyone working for our freedom, they are not as comfortable, warm or safe as we are tonight.

Rich, It's so nice to see people giving our young men, and women who put their lives on the line, the respect and honor that they have earned. It wasn't that way when I was growing up in the sixties. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday, and that all of our family and friends serving in the armed forces, return home safe and sound.

You are so right...and imagine how many military families are separated this holiday season.  We can't do enough to thank them for their great personal sacrifices.

Rich I know it will, he is excited we just dropped him off at the airport and he flies to Chicago on the 20th. Just feeling a little sad because he will not be home for Christamas. You know, a mom thing.

Rich, awesome post.  I can't remember if I told you, but I have some extended family that lives on a cliff overlooking Puget Sound.  I spent some time there on a family vacation when I was a kid and was fortunate enough to watch a scene like that in your picture!  I couldn't believe that a sub was cruising past their back yard!  As far as I am concerned, our military members are all heros.  Happy holidays Rich!  One of the presents under my tree had better be a Dungeness crab from you!  LOL!
