Creating your own real estate business takes an entrepreneurial spirit and, if you’re planning on expanding beyond yourself; a sense of leadership is key!  Being an entrepreneur has changed over the past few years of the economic downturn.  It takes much more than an ability to see the big picture and the tenacity to work through setbacks; it requires creative thinking and the ability to lead others to team up and be a part of your vision.

 

So, what does it look like to be a successful entrepreneur in 2012?  Below are 12 key traits that are invaluable to leading your real estate company as noted by business writer Carol Tice, which we expounded on to make more specific to you as real estate agents.  We think these will reveal what you’re already doing right and perhaps some ways to improve!  Take a look!

 

1. Listen. Tune in to what your clients and co-workers are saying.  You’ll find great ideas for how to move forward.

 

2. Give credit. Workers love leaders who acknowledge their ideas.  Whether it’s an agent in your office or even your secretary; pointing out how others contribute builds a strong sense of “team.”   

 

3. Be yourself. In our age of sound bites and phony smiles, don’t be afraid to be honest about who you are and show your personality.  It's rare and refreshing, and makes your team and clients feel like they know you.  Your co-workers will want to help you succeed and your clients will want to give you referrals! 

 

4. Communicate. So much company dysfunction can be prevented with clear communication.  Otherwise, workers are in the dark. And soon, they won't care.  Also, keeping your clients and leads in the loop of what’s going on will cause them to trust you and will even keep you at the forefront of their mind. 

 

5. Don't be trendy. Avoid the “strategy du jour” problem. Choose a course and stick to it.  Find out what works for you and your business, but find that balance of being willing to try new things.  It’s a fine line between trying every new trend that comes along and avoiding the trap of getting stuck in your ways.  

 

6. Beat anxiety. Stop worrying and turn your negative emotions: regret, fear or sadness into teachers that help shape your character.  

 

7. Be service-oriented. Leaders can be sort of self-involved, forgetting that they are in a position of leadership. To serve customers, co-workers and even your community; stay focused on others.

 

8. Be accountable. Define the results you want, and acknowledge when a screw-up is your fault.

 

9. Use empathy. Demographic changes have foisted more and more women into the workplace. Make sure your communication and leadership style is a fit for today's workforce.

 

10. Share the big picture. If your workers don't know the company’s overall goals, it can be hard for them to solve problems. That leaves you having to micromanage every problem instead of being able to delegate and offer guidance.

 

11. Keep your cool. If those in your office are worried about whether you're in a good mood today or not, little gets done.

 

12. Think like an outsider. Think like an outsider so you can often see your business with fresh eyes. Use your unique perspective to spot opportunities other are missing.

Hi Pat and Chris, thanks for the comments! We agree that it's important sometimes to revisit personality traits that are common amongst successful business people and entrepreneurs. In today's tech world, sometimes we get so caught up in what we're supposed to be doing marketing-wise that we forget to remind ourselves how we're actually treating our clients. The interpersonal skills and attitude you take toward your business is what will help you STAY successful. No amount of high-end marketing in the world will help you in real estate if you don't know how to get along with people. Thanks again for the comments! Great points. Be Accountable is a big one. It is always good to own up responsiblities and tasks so we do not procrastinate too much or not getting items done at all.

You're right, Eileen. The more accountable you are the more successful you will be. Excusing yourself for not meeting a goal or not getting things done will get you nowhere. If you're not going to hold yourself accountable, there's no way you're going to be able to please someone who IS holding you accountable. Thanks again for sharing!
