Does the Design of your Kitchen Cause You to Gain Weight?

HouseLogic has an interesting article and video regarding the design of your kitchen and how it may lead to a larger consumption of food. The article notes the following designs which seem to lead to a higher consumption of food:

  • Large great room/kitchen combinations tend to draw people into this area and therefore lead them to eat more.
  • The work triangle in kitchens - The smaller the triangle leads cooks to eat more while preparing.
  • Type of refrigerators.
  • Convenient storage.
  • Cabinets which have open shelves.
These ideas were very intriguing to me and intuitively seem correct. The more time I am around food, the more I eat. Think Super Bowl party and standing around watching the game and eating.

I still dream about remodeling our kitchen, opening it up and creating a larger, open area. This may cause me to have second thoughts. What do you think?

I can see that being true, but I think there is enough over weight  aka fat people that came from small cramped kitchens.

I cause me to gain weight because of my own lack of self discipline. It's not my kitchen or McDonalds fault. It's mine!

Winston, it is clearly not a single contributing factor, but fascinating. I know from my own experience that being at a party contributes to my overeating. Having too much food around or as the video stated, using larger plates allow me to eat too much.

Joni, I do agree that personal responsibility is the key to true success and freedom. But I also have to accept responsibility for the design of that new kitchen. Just another factor for me to consider.

Cal, that's really interesting. I would never have thought that kitchen layout would have any influence on overeating.

yeah... I can see that.  Right now I'm on one of those involuntary diets... I'm sick and nothing sounds, tastes or smells good.

What an interesting thought.  Considering my last three kitchens, I can see the different effects they each could have had in their differences.  Thanks for sharing this, Cal!  Hope you're doing well . . .

Cal, not feeling any truth in this one except that the consulting fee was more than likely substantial enough to include the kitchen in the blame game.

Very interesting Cal................makes sense too.  Although I do have a friend who is very much over weight.  She eat her meals from a small custard cup, but fills it about 10 times.  She's only fooling herself.

Shannon, I had never considered it either.

Tammy, hope you feel better. I guess that you can always look on the bright side and give thanks for eating less! HA.

Mimi, I am doing great. Life is grand!

Kevin, I hear you. Not putting much stock into it.

Roger, Interesting about the custard cup. I do think I am going to change the size of my plate though. My wife uses a smaller one.

Cal - interesting especially the great room concept but in the end it is all about self control not finding an excuse for the current state of our flab ..... I would not let this give me second thoughts about renovating my kitchen especially if remodeling provided better space (I am a big fan of great rooms and have been for years)

I am with you on the great room and opening up spaces. The intriguing thing for me is not looking for an excuse that rationalizes my overeating, but building some self awareness. This put into perspective some times when I do overeat and be aware enough to see what factors may contribute to my lack of discipline. It may actually help me build in some ways to safeguard against overeating!

Yeah, I guess. It kinda' makes sense. However having spent near 32 years in the High End Custom Cabinet business, (The expensive stuff) I'd say that eating habits are the least concern of those remodeling their kitchen. (that could be the problem.) As one of my mentors once said: "You don't need to spend this much money to store your corn flakes. We're in the business of creating a life style." Life style, efficiency of operation, and impressing the neighbors seem to be the predominate factors in kitchen design. But it's interesting.
