Organics Recycling Pilot Program

(aka composting materials)

Call the City of San Antonio at (210) 207-6428) for more information.

As part of the City’s new Organic Material Recycling Pilot Program, the Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) is introducing a new green cart for the collection of organic material such as leaves, grass, shrub and tree trimmings, food scraps and food-soiled paper (e.g., used napkins, paper plates, and pizza boxes). a

The carts will be delivered to homes in select neighborhoods from September through November. The selected neighborhoods will be part of the program’s pilot phase.

This new program is part of SWMD’s 10-Year Recycling and Resource Recovery Plan. The plan’s goal is to increase the City’s recycling rate to 60% by the year 2020.

Buenos dias Senora Verde! Nice to see SA finally got this program going. I would have thought it would have been in place years ago as your area seems to be more advanced in the "eco" zone than most. Better late than never. My neighbor helped me create a compost pit in my new backyard the other day so I am all excited about my forthcoming garden and home grown veggies! Happy Easter mi amigo, voy a Mexico manana para una semana!

Cathy: It only takes a few minutes to separate organic material from the rest of the trash...I hope the San Antonio Organics Recycling Pilot Program is a huge success!

What a great idea for folks who are unable to do a compost pile. Recycling organic waste can reduce up to 20-25% of landfill use. They should focus on high organic sites first such as restaurants.

David - Definately, great idea about the restaurants. I don't sit on this committee but I certainly will make that suggestion to target restaurants!
