The Meal Deal

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Realty Center

I read a recent Better Homes and Gardens article, which said the research is clear:  Family dinners are good for kids.  But if you are not in the habit, it can be hard to make it happen.  Thanks to The Family Dinner Project, an online community started by a bunch of like-minded Harvard folks.  On their site, thefamilydinnerproject.org, you can find tips to get started (think small and don't obsess on dinner---maybe breakfast is better for your family), a log to track progress, a list of one-line conversation starters, mealtime games, and of course, menus.  Genius!

Kristin, you can see by some of my blogs, food and family come together all the time. I am surprised how so many people eat on the go in their cars and have no family time! Glad to see press is addressing it!

Good morning Kristin,

With todays day and age it is amazing how families have got away from family dinners.  I grew up with a large family and dinner time was where we all conversed when that bell rang.  Those are great memories.  Back than it was a special treat if we got to have dinner in the living room on occasion, with plates on our laps or on TV tables.  Today, it's a treat for us to sit around the table!!  I wish that wasn't true for us, but it is.

Cindy, isn't that the truth about it being the other way around as a treat/at the dinner table...I agree!

We need more families eating together and spending the time to learn about each other's days. Kids need to know that they are loved and listened to, and mealtime is the best time for this.

Kristin

I feel it's important for a family to eat together to bring the family together.

Good luck and success.

Better Homes and Gardens huh.  Why does that not surprise me that AR'S M.M. reads that magazine. Well whatever you read my dear it pays off for all of us folks who have the pleasure of reading your wonderful tips.   BTW-Today is six weeks, I miss her so much. A BIG hole there in my heart.

I always insisted on family dinner together, Kristin. But after Tim got old enough for sports it was hard to keep it going so I don't how people do it. But I think if you set many 2-3 specific meals per week-that's a good start.

Toni, I agree, probably unrealistic for many to do it each day, but as often as possible is great!
