Prom is NOT the best night of your life!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Riverbend Realty, Cape Girardeau, MO
High school can be a miserable time. During my 20 plus years with high schoolers, I used to preach and preach the following: These are NOT the best times of your life. Life does get better when you can make some of your own rules. The traits that others tease you about right now are often the VERY TRAITS that serve you well for the rest of your life and set you apart from others in a GOOD way.

During Prom season,
I have some words of caution/wisdom for all of the teens out there who aren't having such a great time.
Don't despair if you are looking around and wondering why everyone else seems to be having the time of their lives. If they are having the time of their lives, that means the REST of their lives will be pretty sad--with them always looking backwards to the glory days. Don't despair. Look forward to the BEST times of your lives!

If you are looking for a foreclosure in Cape Girardeau, Perry, N. Scott, or Bollinger counties, I am the region's most experienced REO agent. As the area's ONLY Fannie Mae direct listing agent, I list more foreclosure properties than any other agent in this MLS. I am among the few local agents approved to both list and sell HUD properties. Give me a call if you are looking for help with the purchase of a foreclosure property.

If you want up-to-the-minute real estate information, the only way to get it is to have an agent set you up on auto-notify with immediate delivery. Your listing information will come directly from MLS only when it comes from an MLS member. You willl not have to wait for the information to roll to those other websites, and you will not have to check multiple sources. It's free, so why not give me a chance to help you in your search?

NO OTHER SOURCE is as complete or as fast as your local REALTOR®’s source. This is not just an advertisement for REALTORS®--it is information about how the system really works.

Liz,

Great words of wisdom.  When my son started high school, the principal said those exact words to incoming freshman class, "These are the best years of your life!!"

I told my son later , "I disagree!  The highschool years can at times be very hard!"   For me, life keeps getting better and better as the years roll by...

Sonja~ You are a wise Mother! Some of the saddest adults I've ever known were star athletes in high school, beauty queens, cheerleaders. REAL LIFE does not measure up to their mis-guided, inflated memories of time gone by. Far better to be the late bloomer who continues to flourish through-out adulthood.

ASIDE: I'm not saying that the athletes, beauties, and cheeries never grow up to be self-actualized adults. They do, but only when they learn to leave high school behind, just like the rest of the crowd does.

Love your line that life does get better "when you make your own rules." We have the life we create and the sooner we realize that and can make it happen... the better!

Emily~ It really seems absurd to me that "adults," who do have a say in their own destiny, would ever tell teenagers, who are beholden to nearly every adult in their lives, that those years are the best years.

Ronald~ I do remember some really good times in high school, but I knew even then that high school was a mere preamble.

Liz - love your comment about always looking back!  I occasionally work with a new construction site agent who "used to be" a local beauty queen.  Constant reminders of her "glory days" in every conversation, in her office, etc., etc.  And as a 57 year old Nana with a 20 month old grand-daughter, I can tell you unequivocally that THESE are the best days of my life!!!

Hi Liz - You're absolutely right. The last time I went to a high school reunion - my 10th - I was amazed at how many people hadn't changed a bit, in spite of living through the late 60's and early 70's, a time famous for changing young people. I didn't much like high school to begin with, and I've avoided every subsequent opportunity to go back and relive those times.

Dick~I attended one high school reunion, my 15th, and I was amazed at how many of my classmates had teen-aged children--one of whom was a "prom" baby. As was the custom in those days, her teen parents got married and then divorced a few excruciating years later.
