Transparency With Social Media Depends On What?

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Transparency EffectNo question with the public nature of Social Media, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, there is a lot out there about yourself for people to see. So HOW VISIBLE you are with yourself depends on what?

Think first - who are you, and do you want all that revealed, some of it revealed, little of that revealed? Under age 20 people seem like they are complete open books for some reason

Re-evaluate often - If you are kind of a straight person and people cringe at your occasional off color language or humor and tell you, will you change? If you have a blue mouth or lamp shades on your head at parties does Grandma seeing that on Facebook bother you?

Target the audience - finally in crafting what you write, uploading pictures, tweeting, creating a profile or a photo album WHO is the main people finding that on the web? Be good with that. You drinking half a keg of beer while lying on the floor then trying to get that respectable job in the interview down the road, may not be the ticket.

Just be comfortable with your online presence!!

I dont think enough people 'think' before they post online. I'll read things from my high school classmates and think to myself 'geez... they have not changed even a little bit'... and thats pretty scary for some of them.

I don't say anything online that I wouldn't say to somebody's face.

So, if a person should decide they don't like me for some reason or don't want to do business with me because of something I've said, so be it. I don't give a crap. What they think of me is none of my business. Of course, I would never intentionally hurt somebody, and I would feel bad if that happened. But what they see is what they get.

I am always amazed at the number of agents who drop politically charged commentary on their FB pages - personally, I think it's ridiculous. While I'm proud of my ethics and belief system, I don't use my business image to discuss them. My close friends and family know how I stand politically - it's not my job as a Real Esate professional to try and sway public opinion.

This goes the same for too much personal information too...I don't care if you are worn out from a hard night of partying...go the bed and wake up with a new attitude. I also don't care if you're in line at Starbucks or if you're eating a tuna sandwich. Think, think, think. If you don't have something of value to add - be disciplined and say nothing.

Good advice Gary, Many people have lost jobs, projects and clients with the silly things they or their friends have posted on the internet.

Gary,

Full exposure is like the 70s, when many were streaking across my high school campus.  Sometimes we might want to avoid the obvious... g

I am pretty happy with my feeling that now, in my acvancing old age, what you see is what you get.  As I have settled into that here at AR, I realize that while there are things I will not get ino (religion, politics) most everything else is an open book. I love that who I am defines my audience, instead of my audience defining who I am.

If you're comfortable in your skin, that will shine through with your online presence.  No one wants to connect to someone that feels phony. I love what Sally says above. It really does makes all the difference in your life as well as in your business when people connect with the authentic YOU!

I'm with Debb, #12 on this topic yet I still don't have the time for the social media stuff and often wonder how others can manage their SM websites.

Dear Gary,

That is a creepy X-ray. Was that you? Looks like the type of weirdo picture I might take of myself. Drinking under a keg & such was never and will never be on my bucket list. I have a pleasantly boring life, which makes it relatively unsuitable for social media, because who would want to know that you weeded the garden for an hour or something like that.

Gary: I am naturally a very private person and I'm just amazed at how open some people are. The rule I try to live by is: would I want my mother (and for business - my clients) to hear something on the news or read something in the newspaper about me but even that's not enough anymore with social media.  I think it's important to be even more cognitive of your privacy, not because you're hiding something but with identity theft and such, it's a must to be careful.

Gary, I think that possible buyers or sellers like to get a sense of your strengths and your experiences that show in your blog.  Too much information about your personal life is not very professional. We must be aware that what you print on the internet remains there forever!
