Is it Wise to Use Our Free Time Writing Guest Blog Posts? Requests by Other Professionals We Meet on the Internet

I’ve suffered two losses this year, although minor in the larger scheme of things. I was asked to write guest, blog posts for two different blogs and two different groups of people that I had formed relationships with on social media.

The first deleted my post along with the other guest bloggers’ posts after only a few weeks live on the net, and ne’er without so much as an explanation. No return emails, complete and total silence. For whatever reason, I know it’s not because of me personally, as I was in good company. In the future I won’t be able to justify spending precious time writing blog posts only to have them sent away somewhere into the blogosphere filing cabinet.

The second request and group, as it turned out, didn’t have a valid copyright license, so anything with my name connected to their name would be, well, taking future liability risks. Getting involved in a legal tangle is not my idea of promoting my blog writing or professional opinions. See Lenn Harley’s blog posts tagged copyright. We've been asked to guest blog a couple of times, but there's always something that gets in the way: lack of time! I barely have time now to keep up with our own AR & WP blogs, and when you add in all the transaction management, social media engagement, accounting and other $$ generating work, there's just not enough time in the day to write something for someone else's blog. The last offer we got was to write something weekly for our town's page on www.AmericanTowns.com, which we said we'd do, but we still haven't gotten all the details yet. We'll see how it goes!

Maybe it's a waste of time.  Maybe it's a poke in the eye by a rude colleague.  Probably depends on the specific arrangement.  But, what jumped out at me were your remarks about copyright infringement (and protection) and liability.  As a rather risky (and occasionally risque) blogger, I need to think deeper about these concerns.

Hello, Bob, you might want to. Without saying specifics the other blog was a famous name and I learned from another blogger that they did not have the copyright license to use that name.  It was something I wondered about, and once I got that information, I of course would not participate in that blog. I suppose that writing a guest blog depends on advance knowledge & agreement with the host (and host's platform) as to how your post will be used and retained.  Even then, as you have demonstrated, there are no guarantees.

I have hosted a guest blog, but I left the post up so the guest poster might benefit.

Man, those 2 instances do sound more like time wasters. I have never had the opportunity to do a guest blog, but would definitely have to think about it if I did. Especially with the copywright issue, that is a very interesting point.

Rosemary, having enough time is indeed one of the challenges of being an agent. Write content for your own blog and not someone else's. Thanks for your comment today, 

Sylvie, Especially in these days of SOPA, there is more scrutiny of posts and images. I wouldn't like it if someone copied and pasted my posts as their own. Likewise, a famous name capitalized on by those who have no right to use it is wrong also. If I ever develop a brand, I would make sure I have it properly copyrighted so there's no question later. Wow, doesn't seem to be any courtesy for your valuable time involved either? I think that actually it's a good idea in the long run as Lenn has mentioned but you never really KNOW what or where your posts will end up.  I've personally asked many people that would find it personally hard to do their own blog to just do a guest spot on mine.  They've gotten great benefits from it.  I just think of it as 'diversity' for my blog with differing opinions or perspectives.

I wouldn't let a couple of bad eggs spoil your opinion, because guest blogging is a great way tap into someone else's readership and following to drive traffic to your own blog.  You may just need to do a little more research to make sure they get enough traffic to make it worth your time, and that they are a legitimate group.

Hi Lyn, I don't mind if someone wants to post on my blog, but I've decided I'm not going to blog on any other blog. It doesn't seem like it pays off. I don't appreciate having to spend time writing a post and then have it deleted. People can post on my blog though. 

Matt, just not for me, unless it is someone who is notable and has a notable blog.
