The humorous side in selling real estate

Most know, that I am third generation in real estate with a strong background in just about every area in real estate, including rehabbing and redesigning.  My Dad, built his first home when he married my Mom.  Mom used to tell us stories about the neighborhood kids coming to their door and asking "Can Jim come out and play?"  Dad had to be 24 at the time.

Mom and Dad, on a whole, generally moved one block at a time.  From one end of the street to the other.  But that first home, while I wasn't born in it, Dad sold it to a friend and his wife and two girls from our church.  I remember going to this home for dinner at times over the course of the years.  It was a pretty neat and cool house and I loved it because it was the first one my Dad built.

That family has stayed in the home and while my Dad's friend and his wife have passed away, the two daughters, still live in this home and we still stay in touch.

We saw the two sisters at my nephews wedding.  We were standing there talking and then out of no where, the girls looked at my Dad and said "There is a plumbing problem at the house and you need to fix it."  They were serious!  What they didn't realize was that Dad's responsibilities ended when he sold them the house to their parents way back roughly 55 years ago.  Dad looked at us and said "That's a first." But the way my Dad is, he asked them what the problem was and told them who to call.

The moral to this story is, don't take buyers or sellers knowledge or for granted when it comes to buying or selling, let alone maintaining, because they don't sell or buy everyday.

This is a lovely story.  The reality in real estate is that its much easier to maintain the relationships we have and where we are already known, [past clients or sphere of influence] BUT we keep canvassing the new side of life as our way to bring new sales.

A wise person told me recently its much easier to reach out and touch dozens of past clients looking for referrals than it is to speak to the same numbers of new people daily and identify their needs.

You are indeed fortunate.

What a fantastic story, Barb!  And it proves your point so perfectly too.  Got to admit I'm chuckling over those two sisters still wanting your dad to fix the plumbing tho ...
