Alt Tags

By
Real Estate Agent with Missy Caulk TEAM

I enjoy  looking at all the ALT tags on Chris Griffiths posts and Bob Carney's posts. Some people have emailed me and asked what the heck is an ALT tag?

I found this great video on YouTube with the master himself, Matt Cutts explaining ALT tags. ALT tags are important because they tell the person reading what the image (photo) is about.

It is easy to do on Activerain, after you upload your photo, just add a title tag and image description. The title tag will be what shows up when someone holds their cursor over the photo. Google likes us to use ALT tags, enough said.

Michigan and new addidas logoHere is an example:  Put your cursor over the image and hold it there. See it?

Now enjoy the show.

Happy New Year Missy!  George Tallabas told me about the importance of Alt tags and I went back and relabeled most of my posts.  Great tip.

Missy...

I started using my alt tags a long time ago.

But I am not using mine for the same reason other member's use them.

I use mine to mouth off :)

Like this...This image was made and given to me by Jeff Turner. Stealing it is not worth the aggravation I will cause in your little world :)

P.S. Now see. I'm cracking myself up here :)

TLW...ROAR!

Alt tags are very good, but I would recommend not overusing them on your main website.

OK Ms. Missy,I go back (in my spare time) and start labeling my pictures.  Thinking of something funny will help me want to and remember to do it.  Thanks for the reminder.  I gave you an exercise to do with your team on one of my post that you made a comment on, but forgot where I put it now.  I'm doing a post on "team rewards and motivation", hope to have it out this week.  Liz

Yes.  Using the 'alt' attribute is very easy and, in my mind, a requirement.  Just as clarification, 'alt' is not a tag, it's an attribute (of the HTML <img> tag).  In fact, if your interested in your site being 508 compliant (http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10-HTML-TECHS/), the 'alt' attribute is a requirement.  Another important attribute is the 'title' attribute in your <a> tag.  This will provide similar mouse-over description of your link.

For example (shameless plug to follow :-):

  1. <img src="http://www.classifiedflyerads.com/images/headerlogo.gif" alt="ClassifiedFlyerAds.com Logo">
  2. <a href="http://www.classifiedflyerads.com" title="Click here to go to ClassifiedFlyerAds.com">

Another less important attribute to the <img> tag is the 'longdesc' attribute.  Please see, http://www.w3schools.com/htmldom/prop_img_longdesc.asp for more details on this attribute.

Here's a image with a link:

ClassifiedFlyerAds.com Logo

or in HTML,

<a href="http://www.classifiedflyerads.com" alt="Link to ClassifiedFlyerAds.com"><img src="http://www.classifiedflyerads.com/images/headerlogo.gif" alt="ClassifiedFlyerAds.com logo" longdesc="http://www.classifiedflyerads.com" /></a>

Sorry for the shameless plug :-)

Thank you.. I did not know what an "alt" tag was, although I am using them on photos in my A/R blogs.  But now I need to remember that "alt" is not actually a "tag" but an attribute of of the html <img> tag.  I think I need to get some rest now...  I will learn all of this, I will learn all of this, I will, I will.
