Earth Day 2012 - New LED Bulbs
In honor of Earth Day, today April 22, Philips will start selling their new LED bulb that sets a new bar for performance -- and price.
Named the L Prize LED, this bulb will set you back a cool $60, but there’s an "automatic incentive" from the company for $10 so it’s only really $50. The name of the bulb refers to the Department of Energy's L Prize competition to develop long-lasting, efficient, and less expensive LED lamps.
Philips claims its L Prize LED is the most efficient 60-watt LED equivalent and improves on features from Philips own existing LEDs. They claim the bulb will last 30,000 hours (equivalent of 20 years if used 4 hours per day). This LED bulb rates very close to conventional bulbs in color temperature and lumens.
So while it’s not what I would consider affordable, the company states that this bulb will save you $165.00 over its lifetime.
What do you think? Are you ready to pay $600.00 for a twelve pack of these bulbs?
