Harvest your low hanging fruit! - Great SEO

Hi Everyone,

This will be a short post because I am going to cover only 1 aspect of SEO today. Low Hanging Fruit.

If you are like me, you love fruit. God created it for our well being and pleasure.
Fruit does you NO good if you let it fall off the tree and rot on the ground.
Fruit NEEDS to be harvested. Low hanging fruit needs to be identified and harvested.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT JOE? Low Hanging Fruit? Harvested?

Let me explain...

I spoke in a conference in the San Diego area about 2 years ago, and I stayed with a good friend of mine and his wife. They had peach trees in their back yard. I woke up early every morning and went out and picked the peaches that were ripe. The branches were so heavy they hung low. There were lots of them already rotting on the ground also. What happened was they became ripe and fell before they could be harvested.

Low hanging fruit are the keywords that you site is ranking for, but are not producing income or clickthroughs for you. They are the keywords say between position 8 and position 20.. The fruit that is almost ripe, but not quite there. Much of the SEO process is in identifying great keywords and low hanging fruit. I cannot stress enough that in order to succeed in SEO, you NEED to be willing to do the RESEARCH... Measure 10 times, cut once!

This post will help you to know how to identify your Low Hanging Fruit and know what to go after, and how aggressively.

Since I needed a live website to use as our example, I put the names of all those who have SUBSCRIBED to my blogs into a hat and pulled out a name.. Hint - SUBSCRIBE to my blog!

We have a winner! Ginny Gorman.. Her website Rhode Island Real Estate is a great example to use because it has a lot of great Low Hanging Fruit that is about ready to be harvested. Hats off to Ginny for being such a good sport to let me use her in this post. I emailed her and asked for permission and she gave me a "Ok, but be gentle".

Ok, it helps to have excel to plug the info into to do a good evaluation and be able to sort on multiple fields. I find out what keywords they rank for, and what position, and the monthly searches for those keywords. I also find out what Adwords costs for those keywords, then multiply by our Rank factor to determine if it is cost effective to do SEO, or to use Adwords for some of the keywords.. (NOT!) Thats a JOKE.... I NEVER use adwords!

Here is a small sampling of Ginny's results

 Keyword Research

Once identified, we look at the pages that the keywords are ranking for and individually optimize them for the given keyword. Make sure you don't mess up your SEO ability for other keywords that you rank for on the same given pages. If you have low hanging fruit, adjust your Titles, Metas, and Content to get the results you need. Great Keywords do you no good on page 2, or even on the bottom of page 1.

Here is a homework assignment for anyone up to the challenge... Look at the image above and let me know what you think the best Low Hanging Fruit is. Think of not only searchability, but "USABILITY" ...

Oh, one question I have for Ginny... Some of the keywords I found your site to rank for was "FUZZY CHICKS" in positioin 19, and "SPARKLY RED SHOES" in position 8.. are those real estate terms???? :-)

All joking aside, Ginny has some GREAT keyword combinations that were not reflected in the image above, and to her credit, she has over 250 sets of keywords that her site ranks in google for!

Point: Google doesn't care what you say, they will index every word that appears on your pages. I often use mis spellings of relavant words to help my customers get more traffic.

I am surpised that you can grow peaches and the like in Nebraska.  I would think the winters would take their toll on them.

Joe, i like my fuzzy chicks & my sparkly red shoes!!  Okay now i need to figure out how to incorporate all you say and i have been trying but obviously not enough.

I can see by focusing especially on the top 10 for search volume that I can make some headway here on my standings...am I correct?

I like to focus on the longtail to see what I can capture too so does one combine the longtail searches with ones top 10?  I need to do alot more for sure to take over my competitors!  Thank you so much!!

Cool.  I just spoke w/ Ginny and she gave me the low down.  From now on, when I do a guest post for her, I'm going to use "Rhode Island" rather than "North Kingstown RI."

That was generous of you to throw your subscribers' names into a hat and pick a winner. I hope they'll be another opportunity. I have a feeling I'm doing a lot wrong.
