Motivational Power Quote

Group Think is the Kiss of Death

“If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.”

George S. Patton 1885 – 1945, General U.S. Army

As I see it . . . . . . .

Group think is the kiss of death

When everyone is thinking alike there is an exercise of conformity going on in the unspoken word, and everyone is covering their butt.

I have encountered many group think situations over the years.

In one situation the division president was so overpowering that no one would speak up at the meeting or voice their concerns about pending problems with the homes being designed for a new community.

The division president bullied the new home plans through the company’s approval process and no one voiced the option or concerns that the homes would not fit the target market.

The model and spec homes were built and market money was spent and the homes didn’t sell. As a result the division president lost his job along with several numbers of his staff who did not speak up.

Group think is the kiss of death for a business.

When everyone is thinking alike there either not thinking or they won’t take the risk to speak up in either case they’re not contributing and they’re not needed.

Active discussion stimulates the conversation and creates the flow of ideas. Group think is the kiss of death and is a major reason for individual and business failure

Good morning, Lou..... your example was the kiss of death, for sure.... it's a bonus to have a "devil's advocate" on board with every new situation.....

I think strategic discussions can benefit from more of a group “think tank” environment. Tactical discussions just need to be made and fallowed. Could you imagine a rescue crew, or fire department needing to have a group discussion before a plan was implemented?

Devil's advocate usually brings more fire to the table and keeps fueling the thinking tank.

Yes Lou, usually the leader sets the tone for everyone else. However, a leader will speak up, great words.

Even group work is sometimes overvalued. Some work better on their own. :)

In the context of Patton's point of view, he was probably correct, but I never want tos urround myself with robots. I do not want a group of "yes men" around me.

Thank you for sharing the quote with all of us.
