sheetrock damage from leak in ceiling

We are usually not ready when a water leak happens. It can be a water supply leak, drainage, flooding or a roof leak but it never seems to happen at a convenient time. Experts will all agree that it is most important to get the problem corrected as quickly as possible.

The most important thing to remember when dealing with a water leak is to get the area dry.

In order to do this, you must get the source of the problem corrected. Stop the water from leaking. Turn off the water, patch the hole, and stop using it if possible. Do what
you can even before the calling a professional if possible.

Fan blowing under carpet

Next, make every effort to get everything dry again. Small leaks may be cleaned up with towels and sponges.  That wet/dry vacuum that has been sitting in the garage, can be put to good use right now. Open windows and using fans can all help speed things up.

Larger leaks will probably require professional help. Call them right away and explain the urgency. If they cannot get out to your home or business soon, call someone else! Water will cause bigger problems for you the longer it sits.

Have a Water Leak?   Stop the leak and get it dried up quickly.

Taking care of it ASAP is really really important, because if its been there a while, the Insurance company can deny the claim due to negligence.

I see the evidence of leaks in houses I show and wonder why the people didn't do something about it a the first signs. It must be that they just don't know what to do so your post will be helpful. I am adding to my Facebook page. Thanks.

It seems so simple and yet I have come across many scenarios where the homeowner would let a water problem sit until the plumber arrived!

Great post. Just cleaning up the mess is not enough. You HAVE to fix the source of the problem!

Does that include leaks from animals?  Some of them are indeed small, but some are large!  And you think a sponge will work on that?

The repairs will only get more expensive, why not get it fixed early? I'm sure that their are reasons to put things off for a while Debbie. I just hope that the work gets done before the damage gets too bad.

I love stains, it allows me a chance to fix the problem before things get really bad Gita.

Thanks Sara. A little dirt can't hurt - love it. I'll have to tell my wife that after a long day at work and walking into the house.  :)

Well said Richard.

Maybe we need to educate both the buyers and sellers about what mold really is Dale. Education can benefit many people in the transaction.

As a contractor, I want to client to feel comfortable with giving me the mess. If they can get past the hassle, I can handle all the untimely, inconveniences that the leak caused. Wouldn't you like to hand off the problem to a professional and know that things wil be okay?

Thanks Al & Peggy.

So true Sheila, let's just say that it is a challenge at times.

Happy Sunday Mike.

I don't think I've ever have water damage to my car or truck.

You may have a special gift Jane, wanna come on a job with me?

Great analogy Richie.

Adrian, even if not completely dry, every bit can help.

Good Point Raymond!

The insurance industry has a whole list of things that come into play. I don't remember a claim being denied because work was done too soon.

Thanks for the posts. Many people just call their insurance company and wait for them to do something. By then the mold has started.

Hey Tom,

These are great tips for every homeowner. Leaks no matter how small, lead to much cost and damage if not dealt with immediately.

Thanks again!
