Home Ownership Comes With Curve Balls

Home Ownership Comes With Curve Balls

We'd love to say that once you own a home, everything is peaches and cream from there, but the reality is that Life and Home Ownership sometimes combine in ways that make Murphy a happy camper!

Some events you can prepare for (have a fire extinguisher, some basic tools, maybe some not so basic tools), and other events, well they just happen!

For instance Saturday morning Mother Nature decided to throw us a curve ball right across our shed!  One of the many hardwood trees snapped it's top, and our no-maintenance resin shed became a splintered resin shed.  Four of the six roof panels were damaged, and the front corner pieces didn't fare so well either.

treefall
The good news?  Ten feet to the right and it's our deck and house being whacked and not the shed!  More good news, none of us or the assorted furry pets were anywhere near it when it came down.  And even more good news, other than a dent in our extension ladder beside the shed, none of our tools, real estate yard signs and other gear stored in the shed was damaged.  And even MORE good news, the chainsaw was just inside the door along with some extra large tarps we had "just in case"!

So after a few hours of grunt work with the chainsaw and hauling cut branches back into the woods, we're now back to almost "normal"....other than the broken shed and a few major pieces of trunk to finish cutting and rolling into the woods.  And now we've got an excuse to get a bigger shed :)

treefall aftermathSo if you own a home, expect Life to throw you some curve balls!  It may be a leaky pipe, a water heater that calls it quits, or something that comes along with a little help from Mother Nature, but things happen.  Have your emergency funds set aside and be prepared.

Janis, Sometimes there's just no understanding what makes someone do something malicious like that.

Yikes ... I hate when something like that happens.  Not fun at all but as you said, could have been much worse.  Luckily, the tree top didn't hit your deck or home ... and no one (or pet) was injured.  Phew!  Those darn curve balls ... they happen with home ownership and of course, in life too!

BLiz- you're not kidding about curve balls.  I'm glad that she didn't throw those balls at you or your house!  It's always good to try to make lemonade out of lemons!

Bliz,

I'm so glad that life and limb wasn't affected. The rest can be replaced.

Carie, We go through spells.  We now have a new water heater this year, and have had two tree tops fall within the last week and this was the worst that happened.  Life is still good :)

Kathy, When I hear about tornados and such, I know we have it easy :)

Rich, Exactly.  It's just stuff.  Sell another house or two and replace it if need be.

Liz and Bill,

First I hope all are alright.

Yes the curve balls come from out of no where and at anytime.....too many underestimate this part of the home ownership.

Dan, It's another reason NOT to buy the absolute max price home you can afford.  Things like this happen, and a grand here and there out of your budget has to be planned for unexpected house things, and that doesn't even cover long term items like replacing roofs, painting, etc.

Being a homeowner has all sorts of ups and downs.  I've been fortunate not to have anything major happen to any of the homes I've owned.  Looks like you dodged a bullet too, having that tree fall where it did. Could have been much worse.

Christine, One of the perks of being "our age" is having accumulated the tools I need for this kind of job.  And fortunately it happened on a Saturday morning and we didn't have any real estate appointments scheduled for a change.  The timing couldn't have been better if it had to happen :)

Oh no! So sorry this happened to you. But you are so right... these things happen sometimes and all we can do is be thankful it wasn't worse. Glad the house and all of you are okay!

Gretchen, And we'll accept it as is and know it could have been much worse.  It's just a shed, easily replaced.

Stacey, Facebook certainly adds another layer to the AR relationships.  Additional things can be said there in a way that might not work in blog posts.  This home has been ours for 20+ years and this is the closest we've come to having a tree actually do damage to the house.  We've also made so many changes to the home we doubt the previous owners would recognize much about it :)

Tom, We'll take lucky any day!
