Color of the Year (Perspectives on Real Estate and More From a Home Staging Pro)

Color of the Year  (Perspectives on Real Estate and More From a Home Staging Pro)

According to their web site, “The PANTONE® name is known worldwide as the standard language for color communication from designer to manufacturer to retailer to customer.”  Frankly, until a couple of years ago, I’d never heard of them.  These days, knowing that PANTONE® names a color of the year and knowing other current trends is part of the job.

At first, I thought, “Home Staging is about neutralizing a space so I’m not concerned with trends.”  BIG MISTAKE!  A big part of Home Staging is showing how up to date and relevant the house is.  Sometimes to send that message, you’re got to get trendy.

 Tangerine Tango

I’m not suggesting you paint a room this year’s color of the year, Tangerine Tango.  After all, the color is really bold and doesn’t necessarily lend itself to a neutral design.  Go ahead and pick a lovely neutral color for the walls, but use a bold trendy color in accessories.  Pillows, throws, vases, and art can easily be used to draw attention to a home’s positive features.  Keep in mind that every house is different and that just because a color or technique works in another Staged house, the design for your house should be specific to your house.

 Paint

The message here is that if you are going to prepare your house for sale, it is important that you know what buyers are looking for and how you will present your house in order to spark their imaginations. Whether you’re incorporating a trendy color here and there, changing kitchen countertops, or adding a mud room, the move should be toward giving the house the up to date look buyers are now demanding. If the idea of creating such a space is a bit intimidating, we should talk.  I look forward to creating a Home Staging design specifically for your house.

Wishing you a quick sale!

Kathy, interesting color! But it's one I would use very very sparingly. And do they always catch on?

Cheryl, I love purple and had painted the bedroom in my condo a beautiful Amethist color.  When I was ready to sell, I went with a more neutral color because I wanted everyone to love it.

You're very welcome Kevin!

Lyn, I'd like to see that kitchen!

Micheal, Do it yourself Home Stagers often fall into the trap of neutralizing to the point of boring.  A pop of color effectively used will always make a house memorable and attractive.

Kathryn, throw pillows in this color in a floral or strip rock!

Charlie, Are you selling?  If not, I'm a firm believer in makeing your space extremely personal.

Mary Elizabeth, great idea!  Why should a laundry room be white?

Kathy, I was already aware of the color of the year - and I just love it!  Maybe it has something to do with living in Miami; it's very popular.

Kathy- congrats on the feature!  I love incorporating color into a home with accessories.  And, if you're a homeowner, it's a quick and inexpensive way to change your look.  You're so right-staging a home doesn't mean it has to look as if it came out of a cookie press.

Kathy, I was recently surprised when a home stager came through one of my listings and used the word "vanilla". The seller had the home painted upon my recommendation. The kitchen was originally candy apple red and the dining room royal blue. As a matter of fact, several rooms in the house were an awful blue and needed painting.

I tried to get the seller to go with something a little trendy but still neutral. They were pretty adamant about using a color they could live with. After a poor color selection on their part (the walls looked pink). They asked that I select the color. I chose Almond Cream. The house looks fabulous. We used color in the accessories but stayed away from bright or trendy colors to appease the seller. We used her favorite color blue.

I was a little surprised by the stagers comments and probably even took it a little personally as I did much of the staging myself (the seller didn't have the funds). But the home shows well which is saying a lot given where we started. I wish I had taken some before photos so the stager could have seen the challenges I was up against.

Although, I love trendy colors, I think we have to be careful when staging. Not all buyers are into trendy colors. Above is a perfect example of a color I think most buyers would shy away from.

The further we get into the year the more the color is growing on me.  Not a big orange person.   I don't think our market is orange country either but with spring and summer  bright colors are less intimidating.  I will be looking for it.

Not sure how the color of the year is actually determined, but I'm disappointed in Tangerine Tango, as I was also disappointed with Honeysuckle from last year. If you look at the color chart of all of the colors of the year for the last 10 years, they all have a common theme, which leads me to believe that there is a small group of people with a narrow criterian deciding what color we should paint our walls.

Hi Kathy, this color fits into the bold category. I can see it in accesories or in a focal wall, but otherwise too bright for me. Great post in letting us know what is trending.

I think that most people are afraid of too much color, thinking that going the neutral route is the only route to go.  Some carefully placed color or wallpaper can really make a space much more dramatic and subsequently will show better as a result.

It is a very pretty color, maybe an accent or trim and maybe . . . when I go to get my nails polished I'll look for this new color.  I think it would make a very pretty nail polish ;-)

I happen to have a client with a color in a house that is VERY similar to this... she does "energy work" and tells me that "all the colors chosen for her house were decided by the rooms themselves." It took all I could do to not react to that statement....

My kitchen is paprika colored. I love it! And sorry I am not a white walls kind of person. I live here and that is my taste

This color is a bit much for me, too. Colors with orange tones rub me the wrong way for some reason. I'm such a blue or brown person. I would love to have the nerve to use something more bold, but whenever I have, I came to regret it.

Kathy, it's no surprise to me that Tangerine is the color of the year. Everywhere I look I see Tangerins handbags and I think they are great! A color best used sparingly, I think it's fun and hip and glad to see a jewel color in vogue!

Thanks for the home decor tips Kathy. Makes me think I should be prepared by knowing what the "in" colors are each year and I should pass that info along to my Sellers. Perhaps a few well placed objects in the trendy color will send a subliminal message to Buyers that the home is very much in style.

I love this color! You can see how the "color of the year" really influences the items sold in stores during the season. I have seen more of this color this year than ever before.

Thanks for the great post.

Tangerine Tango reminds me of the salmon that was so popular about (ahem) 20 years ago.  Great for accessories, not for walls.  Thanks for sharing the color of the year.

I love this trendy, happy color. Your advice to sellers to use it in accessories, accents and artwork is right on target. I once used it when a seller's entire home was purple, beautiful, but still purple. When I learned that prospects and their agents were not making it past the entry, I knew I had to create a visual that would draw them in, a focal point in the sea of purple. I brought in fresh tangerine colored flowers and huge glass vases of tangerines for each room.  It worked. Sold the house two hours later after being on the market for nine months.
