Designers Secrets!! Everything you ever wanted to now about rules of placement!

By
Home Stager with Abella Home Staging & Redesign

Have you ever wanted to know designer secrets about rules of placements? There have been many times when I've wondered "What is the correct placement of this ______?" You can fill in the blank with any scenario!! It helps to know the guidelines!! As a redesigner and home stager, there have been many times when I've walked into clients homes and have notice that the placement is wrong. Giving them guidelines and rules help. Here are some guidelines to help you figure out the placements.

  • The perfect viewing height for art is 63" above the floor.

  • The perfect amount of space between wall art/mirror and top of mantle is 7".

  • The ideal height to hang your flat screen TV is eye level when you're in viewing position. The ideal viewing distance is 1 1/2 times the size of your flat screen.

  • A bed should be 23" off the floor, no higher.

  • A bench at the foot of the bed should be no less the 2" shorter the then mattress width.

                                                               Apartment Therapy

  • Keep a minimum of 15" between coffee tables and sofa.

                                                                  Design Notes

  • Don't use end tables lower then 30". The lamps will be much better and the proportion is better.

                                                         Building Scheme Design Ideas

  • There should be a minimum of 36" of space around your dining table to allow better flow and use.

                                                               Cote De Texas

  • Light switches should be 36" above the floor and 1 1/2" to 2" off the side. This way they are out of the way of your wall art and door casing.
  • The optimal height for a coffee table is 18" to 20"

I hope these rules will give you some guidelines as to placement of object/items. But keep in mind these are just guideline, and sometimes rules can be broken. Use you designers eyes as your best source of judgment!!

Carmela, these are great tips for anyone, not just for selling a home.  So many people don't realize that correct placement makes a big difference in making your space "feel right."

Maureen, You can always tell when smething is off. It just doesn't feel right. Anyone can sense that but a professional can tell you what is off and help you fix it. So worth the cost!!

Great list of guidelines, there are so many sizes and heights of furniture now, it's not as standardized as it was back in the day, especially with end tables, night stands and coffee tables.

Carmela. Thank you so much for this placement rules. They make sense. Now, if only there was 7" between the mantal and the painting at my house.
