I'll Have Another - The Winner's Circle

By

I'll Have Another - 2012 Kentucky DerbyI'll Have Another... I'm not talking about having another round of drinks... although, there's plenty of reason to celebrate on this 5th day of May, Cinco de Mayo!  I'll Have Another is the name of a beautiful thoroughbred that won the 2012 Kentucky Derby today!

What made this day more special was my daughter (Rachael)  and son-in-law (Alex) had the exciting opportunity to be in the Winner's Circle at the Kentucky Derby this afternoon, with their friend and owner of I'll Have Another, Paul Reddam.  Last month, Paul invited Alex to watch his horse run at Santa Anita, and if he won, Paul promised to fly Alex and Rachael to the Kentucky Derby on his private jet.  Little did they know that I'll Have Another would not only win at Santa Anita, but also go on to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby!

I'll Have Another wasn't the crowd favorite.  In fact, he posted from Gate No. 19, which no horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby starting from that position.  He trailed in seventh for most of the race and surprisingly inched up to first in the home stretch.  And just like Santa Anita, I'll Have Another gave the crowd an exciting First Place Show.  Here's a video clip for those of you who missed it!

Incidentally, I'll Have Another's catchy name doesn't have anything to do with alcohol.  Every evening, Paul Reddam's wife asks him if he would like any more cookies... 'I'll have another' is always his response ;)))

Mel , that is so cool that your daughter and son in law got to go first class to the Kentucky Derby.   I'm sure they will have lots of stories to tell when they get home.

I think it's grand to go 1st class anywhere but to the Derby is special. I'll Have Another was a 15-1 shot. Good payoff!. We'll see if the Preakness can bring a possible Triple Crown Winner

Very cool that Rachael and Alex got to attend the Kentucky Derby, but even cooler that "I'll Have Another" won the derby and they wound up in the Winners Circle and in the photos.  I'm sure you posted something about it, but last I read, Alex was in the hospital................hope all is well with him.

How exciting a race and what a great connection in your family you all had there Mel. I did not know the background on the name either, but very memorable. That horse was back there in 7th at one point. What a come from behind victory.

What a great story!  We love those winners that come out of nowhere, and how wonderful that your daughter and son in law were there with the winners.  Glad to hear Alex is on the mend...Wishing you a fabulous Sunday.  A

Yeah Kevin... Alex is pretty connected!  They had a great time ;)))

It's a once in a lifetime thing for sure... Jim!

Indeed Todd... and my kids made some money too ;)

It was a fantastic payoff... Doug!  I wish I had placed a bet!

That's for sure... Tom!  I guess it's all about 'who' ya know!

Totally cool... and amazing that just 1.5 weeks ago, Alex was in the hospital and we were all on pins and needles!  Life turns on a dime, doesn't it... Roger!  He's doing much better!

It was a great race to watch... Gary!  And one of the best stories from this is the owner of the horse, Paul Reddam, decided to give a rookie jockey a chance... boy did that decision pay off!

Isn't it... Alexandra.  There are are few layers to this story that I'll tell you when I see you in person ;)))  Hope you two have fun exploring on this beautiful Sunday!

Mel, exciting experience for Alex and Rachael.  Health Permitting was the unseen favorite.

Beating the odds is always very satisfying.  A huge underdog, Done Talking won the Illinois Derby and was thrilled to make the Triple Crown.  Done Talking is sired by Broken Vow.   Gotta love catchy horse names....as you say!   B

Mel, what a great story! And how fun for your kiddos! Not many people get to stand in the Winners Circle at Churchill Downs - that is a moment that will last a lifetime! I myself am a Derby freak - I watch it every year, without fail, no matter where I am or what I'm doing. This year I was at home on the couch, but I wouldn't let that keep me from properly dolling up OR from studying the entrants very seriously....

Derby!

Yes, that's sad... Brian.

Look at you... MEA... sportin' your Hollywood glasses and brown rimmed hat... so cute!  Nice to know you're an endearing Derby fan!  Wasn't that a cool finish?!  I'll Have Another did the same thing at Santa Anita... only he snuck in by a nose ;)))

Hi Mel....

Sounds like your family enjoyed a big day at the Derby!  Memories in the making... how cool!  We missed the big race due to being at an AR meet up in Santa Fe but heard all about it from Debbie's dad.
