It's more than Good Humor

Sometimes it is just funny how things show up!  Two weeks ago I was at a closing and while we were waiting for the funding number, we started talking about the things we rememberd most about summertime and being a kid.

Of course, the last day of school was at the top of the list, and then the pool opening at the recreation center.  But the true sign of summer was the first time we heard the Good Humor truck ringing the bells through our neighborhood.

Last week I took a trip back home to visit my family in the Chicago area, I happened across something that I hadn't seen in many years.  Yes, parked at this gas station was the Good Hunor truck.   The high temperature that day was only 50 degrees.

Summer must be right around the corner, afterall there is the Good Humor truck!

Kathy:  I surely DO remember waiting for the Good Humor man to come by... we just called him the Ice Cream man... with that jingle-music that he always played.  You are probably not old enough to remember this, but I also remember waiting for the ice-man to come, and carry that huge block of ice with his ice-tongs inside our house, and put it in our "ice box."

I think the last time I remember that... was in the late 1940's.  That was back in the days when... believe it or not... the local pediatrician/doctor actually made house calls, too.  Memories...

I actually enjoy a good ice cream in the cold weather! I always take my kids out for Ice Cream after a snow storm!

Kathy...

With the price of fuel so high, I wonder just how long it will be before these mobile ice cream vendors disappear forever.

We had both the Good Humor truck and Jack and Jill. The bell rang and the hoards of kids came a running. Those were the days of innocence when the calories did not matter, and the world seemed a safer place.

Karen, you got me.  The ice deliveries ended before I was born, but I do remember milk products being delivered to the house!

Donald, it was more the experience.

Richard, that is a very good point.

Erv, our neighborhood consisted of young families so there were hoards of kids!

I remember waiting with the other kids on the corner when we heard the Good Humor man coming round the bend. I haven't seen one of their trucks since I left Long Island. Thanks for the memories.

Kathy,  We did not have Good Humor trucks but we did have our local ice cream truck.  I remember how excited I got every time I heard the sounds emanating from the truck ... and hoping that my Mom would spring for an ice cream.  I still see some ice cream trucks in my area ... but not many.

Suzanne, we lived at the pool during the summer months!

Donna, haven't seen any Good Humor trucks in Georgia

Toni, my pleasure!

Kathleen, it is great that we all share that childhood memory.

Kathy, I also remember having fresh milk delivered to the family front door in the morning.  Open the door, first thing, and there was a fresh quart of cold milk.  I am also sure that there would probably be a pretty good debate about which was better... today, or fifty to sixty years ago.  Which one would you pick ?
