Is Obama a Moderate?

My Republican friends keep calling Obama a socialist.  I keep asking them to provide proof of these socialist policies. And I keep saying that the Obama Administration is very moderate and in some cases, right of center.  Thanks to Ezra Klien for writing story about the moderation of the current presidency.

Political scientist Keith Poole released a study that probably cheered the White House. According to Poole’s highly respected classification system, Obama is the most moderate Democratic president since World War II. Which raises a question: How can Obama simultaneously be one of the most divisive and most moderate presidents of the past century?

......

Republicans, however, can and should take partial credit for this. Obama is so moderate in part because the Republicans are so extreme. Politicians are ideological, of course, but they are also opportunistic. And the GOP, in closing ranks against almost every major initiative Obama has attempted, has taken away most of his opportunities to be truly liberal. The fight to get to 60 votes in the Senate has ensured, over and over, that Obama must aim his legislation at either the most conservative Democrats or the most moderate Republicans. In this, Obama has only been as liberal as Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson and Republican Sen. Scott Brown have permitted him to be. And that’s not very liberal.

That’s left Obama as a moderate president in an immoderate time. For progressives, that moderation has been repeatedly frustrating. For conservatives, it’s been obscured by a caricature of the president as a free-enterprise-hating socialist. And for the White House, it’s been a calculated strategy. We’ll know in November whether it was the right one.

Karl - I have never bought into the talk from the "getting farther and farther" to the right folks that our President is an extreme leftist.  I think the reality (and history) will show he is actually pragmatic in policy & ideology.  I will check out the article.

Jason, there is no question that Obama is a moderate and a foreign policy hawk...regardless of what the right-wing says.

Interesting graph.  Not sure where they come up with their figures.

The reality is that the national debt is up almost 50% under Obama and the deficit is an endless sea of red ink.  The guy spends like a whole navy of drunken sailors - Obamacare, stimulus, high speed rail, bailouts, Solyndra, and on and on.

Gay marriage is hardly conservative on the social front.  People can use graphs to prove just about any point they want too.

Rob, outside of the stimulus (which every Keynsian economist, right, left and center supported) and extension of unemployment benefits which totals about 1.4 trillion, where has Obama increased spending?

Didn't Obama refer to the 10th amendment on gay marriage?

Stimulus pretty much fell along party lines.  Obamacare definitely fell down party lines.  Solyndra $500 million down the tubes.  GM and Chrysler bailouts basically gave the companies to the same unions that caused them to go bankrupt.

On pretty much every social issue, he is left of center.

I should've said "significant spending increases."  The vast majority of the "Obama debt" was inherited from Bush and the huge revenue losses due to the recession...neither of which can be attributed to Obama's policies.

And remember, we are comparing Obama to past Democratic presidents.

Karl, you could stand President Obama next to just about ANY of the far-right ultra-conservatives in either house of Congress right now, and the case could be made that he is a "Progressive/Liberal."  But, all that aside, I do think it would not be a stretch to say that he is somewhat of a moderate.

Karen Anne...you're right, which was the point of the article.
