Mother's Day Traditions From The 60's are foreign to the young people of today.

I was talking with my assistant and she shared her plans for Mother's Day and how she was going to treat her mom special. I noticed that some of the things she was planning to do are the same as when I grew up in the 60's and some were not  But then I shared with her some of the things that were our traditions and she said she had never heard of some of those things.

Mothers Day Card

So for history's sake, the younger generation needs to know.

So here it is, a 1960's Traditional Mother's Day....

  • You get up earlier than usual on this Sunday morning so you can fix breakfast for Mom instead of the other way around.
  • You give Mom your homemade Mother's Day card that you made in school that is supposed to be a surprise to Mom, but I think she knew.
  • You don't fuss or fight all day with your brothers and sisters because Mom deserves one day of peace per year.
  • Daddy gets all the girls and Mom, too a corsage to wear on their dresses to church. If your mom is still living your flower is pink or red. If your mom has died you wore a white flower. Almost every girl and lady at church has a flower on even some of the men do.
  • You go to church together and sit on the same pew on each side of Mom. And this Sunday you don't talk, chew gum or misbehave because you don't want to embarrass Mom.
  • After church you all go out to eat because Mom deserves a day off from cooking.
  • When you get home you put your flower in the refrigerator so it won't turn brown. You gather around the phone to call the grandmothers and wish them Happy Mother's Day. It takes several tries because all the long distance lines are busy but you finally get through.
  • You spend the rest of the day being "good" so Mom will be glad she is a mom for that very special day.

Traditions change, they come and go but the Special Place our Moms have in our hearts stays the same through the ages.

My Mother's Day Traditions from the 60's Live On In My Heart!

Debbie, it appears we recall the same things.  Mothers Day was a really big deal and I even recall wearing my suits to Church with a red rose bud on the lapel.  Bet we won't be seeing any of that this Sunday!  Times change and so do traditions.  Thanks for turning back the hands of time with your well written post.

Happy weekend and Mothers Day my friend.

John

My wife votes for NO cooking on Mothers Day. Of course, I do most of the cooking in our house and love doing it! Thanks for your post today.

I love reminiscing with you, Debbie.  And, we always observed the flower tradition, too.  So many people are unaware of this.

Debbie- what memories you brought back for me especially the one regarding the flower tradition.  I had not thought of that in years.  Happy Mother's Day.

Times have changed, but I usually still get breakfast in bed. I still love my homemade cards, too.
