What type of leadership does your real estate brokerage have?

As a Colorado Springs CO Realtor, I dare not insist what the absolute answer is to this question: What type of leadership does your real estate brokerage have?

But what I can do is to offer some insights as to how I view what leadership is and how this impacts the culture within a real estate brokerage.

Personally, I think that the emphasis of leadership is overused these days, especially when it comes to corporate environments. The truth is this.  There are very few leaders within larger brokerage models – because to act upon leadership one must be able to carry out his or her vision about how business is to be conducted.

More commonly, there are few persons (leaders) within a real estate brokerage who attain the vision of the company, then set-up the short-term and long-term goals, then call the shots, and then assess what business efficacy means to an entire organizational culture. The rest of the workforce, in actuality, is really delegated to execute the leaders’ vision about how to do business and really has no voice when it comes to implementing a creative and visionary skill set.

That’s why we chose to have a boutique-style brokerage.  Each set of brokers has the freedom to be creative about how he or she will decide how to do the real estate business, as well as determining how this will mesh with his or her personal lives.

The upside to this approach is greater freedom of growing the entrepreneurial spirit. The downside is that it takes time to allow different views to integrate and form collaborative styles of doing business as a community.

Developing leadership within a cultural sense means to allow each individual’s vision and operational implementation to prove its own efficacy, something that is also evaluated through trial and error, and then to be introduced and mixed with 3 or 4 other individuals over time.

Realistically, boutique brokerages take about 5 years to comfortably form. But making it through this initial phase is worth it. The patience to persevere in this type of organization will offer a very strong foundation of collaborative masterminding, cultural trust and a larger window of business opportunities, both from the points of personal fulfillment and financial profits.

So, what type of leadership does your real estate brokerage have? And more importantly, are you developing your leadership skills to enhance your business both personally and for the consumer?

Just some thoughts…

Gordon,

As you might have guessed from our various discourses, we are defintely a collaborative leadership based business.  All or our people are self starters with a highly developed sense of entrepreurship.  So we don't have to motivate or coddle anyone to do something, the job gets done...no leadership just great people who know what it takes to succeed. I like that collaborative leadership style. The five top large firms all are top down with not much vision leadership at the local level other than as team leader or office broker. I like that boutique style Gordon.

Definitely a great food for thought. As for me, I'd like to say I want to cultivate a leadership of servanthood. One that wants to serve his/her agents as well as clients depending on which stage in life this leader is in.

Best of luck as you continue to form your brokerage. I do like to include others in leadership decisions in order to build trust and a sense of ownership. Thanks Gordon.

Gordon,  I completely embrace this post!  Big brokerages tend to be all about profit ... the bottom line ... not highly customized service.  Most big brokerages have a big marketing budget to push their "leadership" but few, if any, actually walk their talk.

...and then...isn't it part of our "nature" as real estate brokers to be entrepreneurial? I love the idea of a collaborative approach...thanks for highlighting it in this post...and here's a Big SUGGEST!
