The Corn Is up! The Heat Is On!

The corn is growing like crazy across Nebraska and will be way ahead of schedule! Why is that not necessarily good news?

Because the heat is already here and it is over a month early this year.  Our corn will be tasseling in mid June this year at the rate it is going.

Rain Rain please please come...we really really need some...it's okay to come before June...just not in the form of a monsoon.

We are light on rain...high on heat... and that is not a good combination unless you are a desert!

Beans are in and although only a few are up...will be ahead of schedule as well.

Kansas and Nebraska wheat looks good!  Hays first cutting was cut way ahead of schedule this year.

What does that mean for crop prices this year?  I am not sure yet...but one thing is for sure...it is going to be a fun summer!!

Mike the risk of a farmer is off the chart, most people take it for granted that the food is always at the local grocer as if they grow it there. Sometimes I wonder what people really think if didn't come from some electronic device. Little do people know that most things evolve around farming unless they have learned to eat their smart phone for protein.

Randy, Winston and Roger...The world evolves around the US farm markets and with this early warm weather putting everything way ahead of schedule makes me very nervous.

Jon...How is Daytona?  I used to live in Orlando in the mid 80's.  You remember then right?  The WEATHER froze all of the orange groves and they are now houses thanks to that building boom...and orange juice and anything associated has been much higher ever since. That is still affecting me adversely 25 years later.

Of course...they overbuilt and put too many homes up.  That affected many workers in a positive way...me included as I went down and ran a Supply store called ABC Staple Company on Douglas road in Altamonte Springs.

Those workers and I were eating burgers and beef and pork and turkey and corn and bread....hmmm sounds like what most people eat these days.  Fast forward to 2012...after Nebraska's hottest spring on record. If the weather continues like this...crops will not pollinate correctly...yields will be way down. No corn for the cows or hogs means higher beef and pork prices in Daytona.  No sweet corn means no corn for you or me.  The Jolly Green Giant doesn't raise his corn...he buys it from farmers.

Go out to the beach on one of the hot days and lay there for 8 hours in the sun with no water...no shade...no protection...I would bet you would have a clue then.  Hope this helps you out understanding the seriousness of this and how it does affect people WORLD wide.

Yes... a lot of corn is sold to ethanol plants...they take certain parts of the corn and use it for ethanol and the byproducts are used in the cattle industry as a feed supplement.

The corn that is raised and sold to the ethanol industry is not the same type of corn that is consumed by people.

Mike, your corn report is a reminder to all of us about not only where corn is growing and how it and the weather impacts your local real estate market. Now I am curious. Are the majority of corn farmers large operations? Or are the ethanol corn growers now more corporations than farmers? Perhaps you can do another blog...

I just saw on the news today that we are going to be seeing high prices in the grocery store as a result of all the drought.  It doesn't look good!  Your explanation of how one thing effects another is well stated!
