Red Hot Pokers

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Stuart & Watts Real Estate WV0026375

Kniphofia uvaria is commonly known as a Red Hot Poker, Torch Lily or sometimes a Tritoma
Depending on the variety, the flame colored flower spikes will reach 2-5 feet in height.
The flower's coloring may range from ivory and orange to coral red.

We planted three Red Hot Poker plants two years ago, and this is the first time we actually got to see the blooms, before the deer got to them.  Now that we have put up the deer netting, we are hoping for more flowers.

Poker Plant

Red Hot Pokers are one of the favorite flowers for hummingbirds.

Rebecca: What a pretty variety and a smart idea to put up a deer net so you can enjoy these flowers before they try to.

Rebecca I haven't seen these red hot pokers for a long time.  They're so pretty. Good luck with keeping the deer away.

I was a bad girl growing up.. I used to run around our turn-a-round gripping the stalk and pulling up so all the pods would go flying like a fire cracker... HA.. I'm sure my mother just loved that! Oh, and Chinese Lanterns.. they were fun to play with.. Not sure my mom ever got any good flowers... LOL

Rebecca- I've never seen or heard of these but I bet it was a treat to see them bloom.  When we lived in Leesburg, the deer would eat all of our caladiums.  Couldn't really complain since I love deer too.
