Robot Lifeguard EMILY Patrols The Beach

Robot Lifeguard EMILY patrols the beach is the latest positive buzz story on the news and in my text messages. For those of you who know I help people on land buy and sell Santa Fe real estate, it may seem odd that I am beyond thrilled to share my name with a robot lifeguard designed to save lives by working on the team with human lifeguards. EMILY was named on the top 50 inventions in 2010 by Time Magazine. If you want to see how EMILY can save someone from drowning, watch the Youtube video below.

By the way, EMILY in the robot world is close to an acronym for EMergency Integrated LifesavingLanYard. She is a robotic buoy capable of swimming at 24 mph even through riptides to rescue someone from drowning. This summer remember to practice safe swimming habits as EMILY may not yet be on patrol on a beach near you. My congratulations to entrepreneur and engineer Tony Mulligan for making his vision a reality and showing us another positive use of technology!

This is a really awesome invention. I saw this on my local news tonight.

You know my area of Colorado was once part of that big ocean that covered Sante Fe. My husband and daughter go out into the adobes and find shark's teeth. I live at the base of the Grand Mesa which is the world's largest flattop mountain. There are over 300 lakes up there. It was once a volcano that was at least twice as high as it is now. Top elevation is around 11,000 feet at this time. Thousands of years ago, it blew it's top. I believe this, because I have volcanic rock in my yard, and a lot of it. Cool stuff.

Debbie, like you I love the landscape that was once the oven floor. I can always count on seeing a fossil sculpture left behind in a rock on my walks in the Pecos arroyos. Your story about yours is fascinating!

Kathy, thank you for your feature of this post on your weekly favs this week!

Wayne and Jean Marie, technology can make a positive difference. It all depends on how we use it.

Larry and Jacque, EMILY the robot has been in the news on and off since 2010. In fact, it was named on of the best inventions of 2010. As we know the news media rarely focuses on "good" news!

Marco, EMILY may not be as visible given the economy and local budgets. However, it would be a great fund raising opportunity for the real estate community to focus on to make a difference. I believe the cost is under $25,000. Wow! Cost is $9950 per developer see Anthony Mulligan see comment #17.

Joan, thank you! I do my best to save sellers from drowning in this economy and buyers from missing opportunities on land!

Thank you for your support and kind words.  EMILY is currently in service in Southern AZ for flash flood rescue by the Green Valley Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team. We are also delivering an EMILY system to the Marana Northwest Fire District Swift Water Rescue Team in AZ. San Diego and Depoe Bay Oregon are also using EMILY'S for swift water rescue as well as beach rescue.  Los Angeles is also planning on evaluating EMILY for river and canal rescue missions.  A single EMILY unit cost $9,950.

Absolutely amazing! What will they come up with next. Perfect solution for the ocean where even human lifeguards could be in danger heading into a rip tide. Thanks for sharing.

David, the applications for sonar technology are staggering. This one is truly life saving.

Anthony, thank you for your comment and update on how EMILY is being used in fresh water as well. New Mexico has lakes today and hopefully I can help bring one to our state in the near future. I very much appreciate sharing my first name with your Robot and the cause that inspired you to make it a reality.

Gretchen and Mel, human are amazing when our dreams for these tools are aimed at positive good works.

Sandy, thank you! I'm still in awe of what EMILY the robot can do. Now, I'm wondering what Emily the human will do to make a difference as well!

Emily -- as a former lifeguard (at a county park on a lake) this would not have been much help for us, but I can see multiple areas where it could be useful -- like in Lake Washington, and throughout Puget Sound.
