If you don't have a relationship, you better be the first to call back

Rocket ManI thought about this two days ago when I was having trouble with one of my computers. No worries about data loss since I have the data backed up in two different ways. I was too busy to actually troubleshoot it myself, so I left some messages for in house repair people. I left the messages around 7:30 AM with no expectation of actually talking to someone. Pretty much, the way it was going to work was, the first one that called back got the job.

That’s exactly what happened around 9:15. The first repair technician who called and said he could be there that day, got the job. The second technician called back around 2:30, and the third never called back at all.

I believe that’s the way many customers find their real estate agent’s too. We know they’re on the internet and trolling from site to site. Without a relationship with an agent, they have no loyalty and probably leave calls and messages in many locations.

Like my experience with the computer repair technician, first come first served is frequently the case with real estate buyers and sellers.

We live in an impatient world, and sometimes just being first is better than being good.

Rich -- you are absolutely right.  I make a point of calling back asap... and 9 times out of 10 the person is soooo impressed they go a quick response, the don't call anyone else.

Richard, I totally agree with you. I'm a home stager and I also provide business training to home stagers all over the world.

I'm amazed how often home sellers and real estate agents call me for my home staging services and comment how often stagers don't call them back.

Similarly, when my students are checking out their competition they are always surprised at how many people don't return business phone calls.

Returning calls is a pain in the neck when you're on the road and busy with existing business. But honestly, in the days before people walked around with phones in their pockets there seemed to be more common courtesy of returning calls promptly -- which often meant having a pocket full of quarters!

Great post and very well said. In business particularly in todays competitive market follow up calls can give you the competitive edge. This is the information age and consumers want and in some cases expect information as soon as possible. Bottomline - answer the telephone and return telephone calls. Great job and congratulations on being featured.

You are so right! If you fail to act, someone else will act for you, and if you don't act, people will remember to never call you again or refer you either!

It's frustrating to get good customer service. People (even Realtors) are demanding when trying to get their needs met. Telling someone you'll call them back between the hours of blah, blah, blah, or the next business day is not very smart and often back fires. In business, misfires will get you no where but broker than the day you were before.

This exact thing happened to me the other day Rich.  I had a buyer call me at 10:00 am.  I was just leaving to go to a funeral, so I couldn't call back until 3:30 that day.  She wanted to see homes the next day because it was her husband's only day off, so she called a few other Realtors, and one of them called her back.  Can't win them all.  Good post.
